A 13-year-old girl who was stabbed to death Thursday morning in Israel by a Palestinian terrorist who broke into her bedroom was also a U.S. citizen, the State Department confirmed Thursday afternoon.

EGYPT: Reformers Seek to Remove Blasphemy Law Sources: Release International, Daily News Egypt, Morning Star News Reformers in Egypt’s parliament want to have a controversial blasphemy law removed from the constitution, but the Ministry of Justice is trying to block their efforts. The law has frequently been used to prosecute people who seem to criticize Islam, and it’s also misused to persecute minorities such as Christians. The Ministry of Justice opposes any repeal of the blasphemy law, claiming it helps stop the spread of “strife and division.” However, reformers say the statute is contrary to the constitution. Additionally, the law is vague, giving judges too much discretion to issue harsh punishments. Since Egypt’s new constitution was passed in 2014, there have been many controversial prosecutions of Christians, while extremists who attacked Christian communities were allowed to act with impunity. Earlier this month, hundreds of Muslims gathered in Qaryat Al Bayda village, south of Alexandria, and vandalized property belonging to Pastor Karas Nasr’s church. Security forces didn’t intervene to stop the attack, but instead arrested six Christians on accusations of planning to illegally build a church. In 2014, there were two high-profile cases in which the blasphemy law was used against Christians. Dimyana Abd al-Nour, a 27-year-old teacher, was sentenced to six months in prison for comments she allegedly made in a history class; and 29-year-old Kirollos Shawqi Attallah was given a six-year sentence merely for “liking” a Facebook page for Christian converts. Please pray that the blasphemy law will be repealed, and that the government of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi will choose to support freedom of religion. Uphold all who are being unjustly imprisoned in Egypt at this time, asking the Lord to grant them the strength they need to endure until their release. Continue to pray for the protection of Pastor Karas and his congregation, especially those who have been arrested and falsely accused.

BANGLADESH: Christian Killed in Violent Attack Sources: Asia Network News, The Daily Star A 60-year-old Christian businessman in Bangladesh has been killed in a violent attack, and the terrorist organization Islamic State has claimed responsibility for his death. Shunil Gomez of Boraigram region in the northern district of Natore died on Sunday, June 5th, after receiving three deep gashes on the back of his neck. According to police inspector Inam Ahmed, the attack bore similarities to previous local fatalities perpetrated by militants. In the past seven months, at least six people have died in violent incidents within the region. Attacks have targeted Christian pastors and Hindu temples, as well as mosques belonging to the Shia minority. “For many years, in the Muslim-majority nation of Bangladesh, Christians were relatively free to practise their religion,” reports a VOMC correspondent in Bangladesh. The correspondent explains why there has been a dramatic increase in persecution: “Two years ago this began to change, and now a small minority of radical Islamists are having a big impact upon religious freedom by targeting well-known leaders and secular bloggers for assassination. MALI: Kidnapped Swiss Missionary “Still Alive” Source: World Watch Monitor Beatrice Stockly Photo: World Watch Monitor The militant group, al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), has released a new video on June 16th, purporting to show that a Swiss nun whom they kidnapped in January is still alive and in good health. The three-minute video, which was posted on social media, shows a veiled Beatrice Stockly speaking in French. In the clip, Beatrice says she has been detained for 130 days, but is in good health and has been treated well, although it has been very hot. She concludes by thanking her family and the Swiss government for all of their efforts to secure her release. In January, after armed men abducted Beatrice from her home in Timbuktu, AQIM released an initial video claiming responsibility for the kidnapping. In that particular video, a masked man speaking English stated, “Beatrice Stockly is a Swiss nun who declared war against Islam in her attempt to Christianize Muslims.” Conditions of Beatrice’s release included setting free AQIM fighters jailed in Mali, as well as one of their leaders who is presently detained at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, South Holland. However, Switzerland is demanding that she be unconditionally released. Please join us in interceding for Beatrice’s safe release and for the protection of all Christians in Mali. Continue to uphold this missionary as she endures captivity. Pray that her friends and family will be comforted in the fact that God is working in the midst of her challenging situation. A Christian Renewal? What Brexit Means for Traditionalists

It is true that British national allegiances have yet to exemplify anything remotely akin to a Christian revival; indeed, church attendance in the UK has long been on the decline. Nevertheless, there seems to be a decline to this decline. Most people in the UK still think of themselves as Christian, and immigrants from Africa and Eastern Europe, Catholic Poles in particular, have made Britain more, not less, religious.[4] There has been an increase in evangelical church attendance,[5] all the while Islamic birthrates in the UK are dropping to under three children per woman.[6] All this suggests that the Christian tradition remains a significant factor within British cultural identity and will only increase in the coming years if nationalist trends continue.

The new British government can go back to its initial objective and negotiate with the EU a trading relationship it wants. UGANDA: Pastor Dies After Meal is Poisoned Source: Morning Star News Pastor Micah Byamukama of Kasecha village in eastern Uganda died after eating a meal laced with insecticide, and local authorities suspect that the person responsible for his death has fled the community. On Sunday, May 15th, the 61-year-old pastor began to feel stomach pain after eating food brought by a man he believed was genuinely seeking to reconcile with him. The pastor was rushed to Kabweri Health Centre where he died at 9 p.m. A nurse who requested anonymity confirmed that the pastor had ingested an organophosphate insecticide. Five days earlier, Pastor Micah, who was a widower without children, had sustained injuries from a knife attack carried out by a group of men. He survived the attack because neighbours responded to his cries for help. These neighbours believe that the person responsible for instigating the first attack is the same one who poisoned the pastor. The perpetrator is described as a local Muslim man who was angered by comments the pastor had made during a public discussion about faith. At least six Christians in eastern Uganda have been killed or brutally attacked by militants already this year; others have received death threats. Please pray for an end to these senseless attacks against the Christians of eastern Uganda. Uphold the pastors and evangelists who are endeavouring to reach people for Christ in regions where such needed ministry has the potential to stir up violent opposition. May believers throughout this country feel strengthened and encouraged as people around the world faithfully pray for them. And on behalf of Ugandans in need of salvation, pray that they will be receptive to the Good News of the Gospel.

ALGERIA: Second Church Ordered to Close Source: Middle East Concern A church in Algeria Photo: Flickr / PhR610 (cc) A church in Algeria has been ordered to close because district authorities claim its leaders are in breach of a 2006 law that regulates non-Muslim worship. It is the second time within the past two months that a church has been ordered to close. Leaders of the church received a letter on April 24th citing that the use of a non-Muslim place of worship is subject to prior authorization by the National Commission for Non-Muslim Religious Groups. The letter also claims the church lease is not valid because the building, rented on behalf of the Protestant Church of Algeria, is registered as residential premises. One month before receiving the letter, church leaders had informed local authorities that they intended to use this rented building as a place of worship. These leaders state that the order for the church’s forceful closure limits their ‘freedom of worship’ which is guaranteed in the Algerian constitution. In addition, they are concerned that the 2006 decree restricts the religious freedom of non-Muslims and contradicts Algeria’s new constitution, as well as its commitments to religious freedom under international law. More information about this country is available here. May the order to close the church be revoked so these believers will be able to meet together and freely worship the Lord. Pray that the church leaders involved in this case will sense the peace and guidance of the Holy Spirit as they work through the process of regaining the use of their building — seizing every divinely appointed opportunity to share their faith. Thankfully, the Lord is equipping His church for growth, even in difficult areas of the world such as Algeria. Intercede for the salvation of the Algerian people, that they may openly seek God and realize the importance of accepting His Son Jesus as their personal Saviour.

NEPAL: Christians Freed After False Accusations Sources: The Gospel Truth newspaper, Nepalchurch.com The Christians were arrested for distributing Bible literature to children. Eight Christians, including two school principals, have been released from custody after being held for several days on accusations of distributing Bible literature to children. Police made the arrests on June 9th based on a 2015 amendment to the Nepalese constitution which states in part that no one shall “convert a person of one religion to another religion.” Among those arrested were Prakash Pradhan, the principal of Mount Valley boarding school, and Bimal Shahi, the principal of Modern Nepal School. Others were members of Teach Nepal, a Christian organization. At the time of the arrests, the educators had completed an earthquake awareness program in various schools. After an appeal was presented to Shakti Bahadur Basnet, the Minister for Home Affairs, by the Federation of National Christian Nepal, those who had been arrested were thankfully released. While we can offer praise to the Lord for the release of these educators from custody, please pray that the Nepalese authorities will allow Christians freedom of expression. Also lift up in prayer the other believers of this country who are suffering persecution and imprisonment for their faith, asking the Lord to reassure them of His unfailing presence and to help them in times of trouble (Psalm 46:1). May the unsaved members of their families and communities be greatly impacted by the unwavering witness of these dedicated lives — compelling many more to seek the truth of Christ’s reality for themselves. VIETNAM: Wife of Imprisoned Pastor Beaten Source: Religious Liberty Prayer Bulletin While Pastor Nguyen Cong Chinh remains imprisoned in Vietnam, his wife Tran Thi Hong has been suffering ongoing persecution in a different manner. On April 14th, Tran was taken from her home and brought to the office of the People’s Committee of Hoa Lu Ward where she was interrogated for three hours and beaten by plainclothes agents, resulting in injuries to her head, knees, legs, hands and feet. Before these beatings, officials tried to prevent her from attending a scheduled meeting with David Saperstein, the U.S. Ambassador at Large on International Religious Freedom. The meeting was able to proceed after Tran informed the ambassador’s delegation that she had been seized and forced to return home. In May, Tran was detained and violently interrogated an additional three times. During one of these interrogations, Tran’s 18-year-old son tried to intervene in an effort to protect his mother, but was then grabbed and choked by police who had him bound and arrested. Thankfully, he was released later that same day. Pastor Nguyen, 45, continues to suffer physical and psychological abuse in a Vietnamese prison because of his faith and advocacy for religious liberty. In 2012, he was sentenced to 11 years in prison for allegedly “undermining national unity.” Additional information on persecution in Vietnam is available here. Join us in praying that the unwarranted attacks against Pastor Nguyen and his family will cease, and that he will be released from prison prior to his sentenced term. In the meantime, as this family awaits a favourable outcome, ask the Lord to grant them renewed courage and strength. May those who witness their courage wonder at its source and also come to faith in Him. Intercede for the Vietnamese authorities that they may uphold true justice on behalf of the country’s Christian believers and, therefore, act with compassion toward them.

NIGERIA: Fatal Attack Over Facebook Post Sources: Release International, Morning Star News A 24-year-old Christian named Methodus Chimaije Emmanuel was killed by a mob of militants in Nigeria after being accused of posting a blasphemous statement about the prophet Mohammed on Facebook. The killing was part of a larger attack on Pandogari town in which three other people also tragically lost their lives and a church was burned down. According to a statement released by army spokesman N.C. Agwu, a member of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps was among those who lost their lives after rioters blocked the Lagos-Kaduna Road. “Some arrests have been made in connection with the violence and the suspects (were) handed over to the police,” he reports. A Baptist pastor in nearby Kagara town further explains that Facebook exchanges between two young people in Pandogari triggered the attacks: “The incident began with Facebook chats between a Muslim and a Christian…. The Muslim youth mobilized other Muslims in the town on claims that the Christian youth had blasphemed the prophet Mohammed.” The pastor adds that the militant group then burned down the Fellowship Baptist Church in Pandogari town. A Christian believer in China recently sent The Voice of the Martyrs ministry a letter of thanks after receiving a Bible during a VOM-sponsored Bible distribution. Wang Xiuling wrote: “Thank you for your selfless love and offering which enabled many people here to get Bibles, the precious words of God. To be honest, I have never read through a book in the Bible. I only had a superficial knowledge of God’s words. I have not believed in the Lord for long. I am still young in my spiritual life.
