NORTH AFRICA: Captain on Trial for Throwing Migrants Overboard

A boat captain faces a prison sentence of up to 90 years after being charged in Spain with the murder of six Christian migrants by allegedly throwing them overboard. According to the indictment against him, the captain and a colleague attacked the six Nigerian Christians because they believed the passengers’ prayers had provoked a storm during the voyage from North Africa.

The inflatable boat had about 50 migrants aboard when it left Morocco in December of 2014 to make the 14-kilometre voyage to Spain. Police state in the indictment that the attackers pulled back slats and beat the Christians, then threw them into the “raging sea” where they were lost. One body was found a few days later off the coast of Granada.

The captain, named as Alain N.B. from Cameroon, has denied all charges. He was one of two men arrested in connection with the incident; the second man died before the start of the trial. Prosecutors in the Spanish city of Almería have requested 15 years for each of the six offences. If convicted of all charges, Alain will be serving 45 of the total 90 years behind bars.

So far this year, more than 300,000 migrants have crossed the Mediterranean Sea in order to reach Europe, after fleeing countries such as Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and Nigeria. Another 3,000 died while attempting to make the crossing. (For a report on a similar incident involving the persecution of migrants, click here.)

Please pray for the grieving families and friends of the six Nigerian Christians whose lives tragically ended while at sea. May they continue to sense God’s comforting presence and strength. Likewise, let’s uphold the loved ones of the many other migrants who perished while crossing the Mediterranean Sea in their attempts to seek refuge. In addition to praying that justice will prevail during the upcoming trial, please intercede on behalf of the accused captain who is, from an eternal perspective, spiritually lost and destined to perish unless he genuinely repents and turns His life over to God. May Alain experience our Lord’s unconditional love and, as a result, receive His mercy and salvation.

PHILIPPINES: Fatal Gunshots Fired by Motorcyclists

Sources: VOM Australia, Release International

A dedicated church elder from Sultan Kudarat, Philippines, was brutally murdered by two men on September 11th. Witnesses say Perfecto Padilla, 52, was resting outside his house in a hammock when two militant Muslim men came by on motorcycles and began firing what was believed to be a 45-calibre pistol from about five metres away. Perfecto was struck by seven bullets in his chest, thigh and other parts of his body. The assailants quickly fled the scene.

Perfecto’s daughter Naomi ran to her wounded father, crying and screaming for help. A pastor was nearby, visiting a church member, when he heard the screaming and promptly came to assist. Noting the seriousness of Perfecto’s wounds, Pastor William borrowed a tricycle so he could immediately take him to the hospital, but the wounded man died on the journey. Perfecto is remembered for his dedication to the church and desire that more people come to know Christ.

Perfectos’ two children, Naomi (12) and Joseph (10), are now left alone without parents. Since their mother went to work overseas many years ago, they have lost contact with her. Our local ministry partner immediately tended to them after being informed of the tragedy. VOM is providing financial assistance for the children so they can receive necessary care, rebuild their lives, and have a hopeful future. More on the persecution of Christians in the Philippines is available here.

Thank you for joining us in praying that Naomi and Joseph, who are deeply grieving the sad loss of their loving father, will experience the compassionate care, comfort and provision of their Heavenly Father who longs to meet their every need. Ask Him to strengthen their faith so that as they grow and mature, they will be able to build on their deceased father’s spiritual legacy. May there be an end to the tensions between Christians and militant Muslims in the Philippines, particularly the Sultan Kudarat area, so that land disputes will be resolved and people can live in safety and harmony.

LAOS: Young Persecuted Christian Now Trains Teachers

A young Christian woman who was disowned by her parents because of her faith is now visiting churches in Laos this month to train Sunday school teachers. After becoming a Christian at the age of 14, Sonxi was beaten by her parents, denied food, and locked away in her room — all in an attempt to prevent her from attending church.

When the abusive parents realized that none of these punishments was able to weaken Sonxi’s faith, they threatened to force the young teen into a life of prostitution. As a result, she ran away from home and was eventually disowned by her parents. The Voice of the Martyrs ministry has since come alongside the abandoned girl, making it possible for her to receive practical skills training in sewing and, later on, with the required assistance to attend Bible school.

We are thanking God that today Sonxi vibrantly shares her faith and is involved with the training of new Christian teachers. May He wonderfully bless her life and ministry, granting her more opportunities to reach out to others and — in His perfect timing — even her unsaved family.

CHINA: Released Lawyer Under Surveillance

Sources: ChinaAid, South China Morning Post

Zhang Kai
Photo: Zhang Kai via ChinaAid

Security officials have been noticed near the home of Christian lawyer Zhang Kai, and they appear determined to put him back behind bars. Zhang was released from detention this March after being held eight months for representing Zhejiang churches in opposition to the government’s forceful removal of their crosses. More about the cross removal campaign can be found here.

In February, while still in detention, Zhang participated in a televised interview where he seemed to criticize fellow lawyers who had been arrested during China’s recent crackdown on human rights activists. Then, on August 30th, a statement retracting that criticism appeared on Zhang’s social media feed. It said he had been forced to smear his fellow lawyers, including Zhou Shifeng, who was sentenced to seven years in prison for “subversion.” (A report on Zhang’s arrest is available at this page.)

“It was a forced act out of fear and I’m retracting all of my comments,” the statement said. Zhang’s social media account has since been deleted. Now Public Security Bureau officials are monitoring his home.

Pray that Zhang Kai will know God as his “fortress, rock and deliverer” (Psalm 18:2). May he experience the Lord’s perfect peace and protection. Please intercede for all who are affected by this crackdown on China’s churches, including the lawyers trying to represent them. Ask God to touch the hearts of the governing officials involved so that they may also seek the truth of the Gospel and receive His gift of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.

IRAQ: Family Longs for Return of Kidnapped Child

family’s place of refuge.

During a “medical check-up” in the northeastern Iraqi town of Qaraqosh, ISIS militants took notice of Ayda Abada’s three-year-old daughter Christine. Suddenly they snatched the child out of her mother’s arms and gave the crying girl to a bearded fighter. This story was previously reported in a VOMC-produced video documentary which can be found here.

Two years later, Christine is still missing. Her distraught loved ones, who now live in an Erbil camp for displaced people, continue to suffer sleepless nights and unimaginable fears over her welfare. On the wall of their cabin, they have placed a low-resolution photo of Christine that her brother happened to find on Facebook. The photo had been taken during the time Christine was away from the family.

Christine’s mother, Ayda, forces herself to smile when she speaks. Yet her eyes convey a deep sadness that goes beyond expressed words. “We heard that Christine is living with one of the Christian women kidnapped by ISIS. The woman was forced into ‘marriage’ with an ISIS fighter and somehow managed to take our Christine under her care.”

Ayda’s days are filled with uncertainty. “Sometimes I fear that my Christine (will) grow older without me and that I will never see her again.” She looks down to fight a tear, but this heartbroken mother doesn’t want to give up hope. As long as her daughter is in Mosul, Ayda and the rest of the family will not leave Iraq. She will not rest until her little girl is safely back in her arms. “Without her, it’s like part of our heart is missing. We are not complete without her.”

Please uphold Ayda and her family during this time of uncertainty. Pray that each member will experience God’s comfort and encouragement, knowing that He is able to lovingly watch over little Christine. May those holding the child hostage sense a strong conviction to safely return Christine to her family. In fact, let’s remember all of the Middle Eastern children/loved ones who have been wrongfully abducted by militants, praying that the estranged families will be miraculously reunited — giving God praise for His divine intervention. Intercede for the abductors, that they will discover the reality and love of Jesus and, as a result, turn from their sinful ways.

UZBEKISTAN: Pastoral Family Granted Asylum

Source: The Voice of the Martyrs USA

Dmitry and Marina Shestakov with their three daughters:
Alexandra (left), Vera (centre), and Maria (right).

Pastor Dmitry Shestakov and his family fled Uzbekistan three years ago after he had endured four years in a labour camp and, subsequently, received numerous death threats. The family’s journey to freedom officially ended on August 30th with their arrival in the United States where they were granted asylum.

Nearly ten years ago, authorities had arrested the pastor after raiding the Full Gospel Church in Andijan. Uzbekistan’s Religious Affairs Committee claimed Dmitry was not an authorized leader of any officially recognized religious organization. Labelled an “imposter,” he was sent to a prison camp more than 640 kilometres from his home. The distance made it difficult for his wife Marina and their three daughters — Maria, Alexandra and Vera — to visit him. (A previously posted report on Dmitry’s arrest may be reviewed here.)

Following Dmitry’s release on January 21st, 2011 (exactly four years since he entered prison), the government continued to monitor him closely, requiring him to obtain written permission in order to leave his house. After two years of living under these restrictions and receiving death threats, Dmitry finally moved his family to Ukraine where the United Nations Human Rights Council granted them refugee status.

Today, Dmitry and Marina, along with their youngest two daughters, Alexandra, 20, and Vera, 16, are starting a new life in the United States. Their eldest daughter, Maria, 22, will remain in Ukraine with her husband.

We are thankful to the Lord for providing Dmitry and his family safe passage to their new home. May He now lead them to a church where they can continue to grow in their faith and serve Him within a community of fellow believers. Pray that the testimony of the suffering experienced by Dmitry, his wife and daughters will be used to encourage believers in the West to also live out their faith with unwavering commitment and courage.

David Stockman-Gold Prices Will Soar When Central Banks Fail

Former Reagan Administration Budget Director David Stockman’s view of the wealthy buying gold is most sobering and illuminating. Stockman contends, “I think some people are realizing the central bank era of bubble finance and massive money printing is leading to a dead end and some kind of crackup phase in the world monetary system and a breakdown of confidence in the central banks. I think what this means is when the market loses confidence in the current regime, when they no longer believe the Fed has your back, that there is a put under the market or that they know what they are doing, when that confidence finally evaporates, the monetary system will be in crisis. Gold prices, in my view, will soar because it will be seen as the last refuge of monetary assets that are outside the purview of the control of a failing central bank system. I don’t think we have seen anything yet. It’s only a matter of time when we see the gold price revisit the $1,950 per ounce price that was achieved a few years ago and probably goes well beyond that.”

Watchman Video Broadcast 09-18-16, The Gospel In Your Body Part 7

Visit – The Gospel In Your Body Part 7 | The Tabernacle Part 4 | Pastor Mike Hoggard discusses the amazing way God has designed the human body — its bones, organs, blood, and much more — all of which shows the handiwork of the Creator, Jesus Christ. In this video, we learn about the menorah, how it relates to the number seven and the light of God. This study begins with 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 and 1 Corinthians 6:19. Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. (1 Corinthians 3:16-17 KJB) What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? (1 Corinthians 6:19 KJB)

This video series takes an in-depth look at how we are fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of God and how that directly relates to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, as well as the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Discover how perfectly correct Psalm 139:14 truly is! I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. (Psalm 139:14 KJB)

PAKISTAN: Swift Response Saves Community from Bomb Attack

Source: Morning Star News

Christians in northwest Pakistan narrowly escaped with their lives after security forces foiled a suicide bomb plot against them. Security guard Samuel Masih opened his community’s main gate to four Taliban bombers — and died in a hail of bullets. Two other guards were injured, as were two soldiers and a policeman.

However, the swift response of Samuel’s colleagues meant that a greater tragedy was averted. One of the suicide bombers was killed after igniting his bomb, but thankfully there were no other casualties as a result of the blast. Security officials intervened by killing the three other suicide bombers.

The 30 Christian families residing within the gated community near Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province were unharmed. The Pakistani Taliban reported that the bombers carried out this attack on Friday, September 2nd. The same extremist group involved in this attack claimed responsibility for the Easter Sunday suicide bomb attack that took place in Lahore on March 27th of this year — resulting in more than 70 killed and numerous others injured. Information on the Lahore bombing incident can be reviewed here.

Pray that God will comfort and provide for Samuel’s widow, Razia, and their five children. Ask the Lord to heal Samuel’s colleagues who were injured in this recent attack, offering praise that the lives of those residing within the gated community were spared. Also continue to uphold the families still experiencing the aftermath of the Easter Sunday attack in Lahore. May all our brothers and sisters throughout Pakistan receive the assurance that they are not forgotten by their global Christian family. May God strengthen their faith — and our solidarity with them.

IRAN: Update on Christian Convert Seeking Asylum

Source: Stundin (Icelandic news outlet)

As mentioned in a previous report, Morteza Songolzadeh, an Iranian Christian who could face execution if he returns to Iran, has been living in Iceland in hopes of obtaining asylum. According to European Union law, he may soon be sent to France (the country to which he initially fled), then from there to Iran, unless immediate intervention takes place. (The previous report is available at this page.)

Morteza’s lawyer, Eva Dóra Kolbrúndóttir, explains why it’s possible Morteza will be sent back to Iran: “Unfortunately…as the European countries have been issuing the declaration, they will only grant asylum to those who come from war-torn countries such as Syria. Asylum seekers and other refugees will be sent back, and we have seen it happen.”

Morteza has supporters in Iceland, including Agnes Sigurðardóttir, a Lutheran bishop who wrote a letter to the minister of the interior on his behalf. Although the jeopardized believer has repeatedly requested that his case be re-examined, his requests have been rejected. However, he has not given up hope: “Now I feel good in Iceland. I am used to it. I do my best to learn Icelandic, and I think I can become a good citizen here in the future.”

Please uphold Morteza and his lawyer as they continue in their attempts for his asylum. Pray that the authorities involved in this case — whether in Iceland, France or Iran — will extend mercy towards him, so he will not be penalized for converting to Christianity. In the ensuing days, as Morteza awaits the court’s decision, may God’s presence continue to bring him needed peace and assurance. Throughout the mediation process, may Morteza also receive opportunities to testify of Christ.

ALGERIA: Court Reduces Length of Prison Term

Slimane Bouhafs
Photo: World Watch Monitor

We have received some encouraging news regarding our Algerian brother, Slimane Bouhafs, whose case was featured in a previous Persecution & Prayer Alert report. Slimane’s original five-year jail sentence was recently reduced to three years in a verdict announced on September 6th. However, as the appeal court has still upheld his conviction for “blasphemy,” he would very much appreciate our continued prayers.

Slimane was arrested after posting a Facebook comment about Jesus overcoming “the darkness of Islam.” (More details on his case may be found here.) His legal team are now planning to appeal to the supreme court. Pray that Slimane and his family, as well as his church, will experience God’s peace and compassion in new ways during the appeal process.

Gold Goes To All-time Highs If Fed Admits It Cannot Raise Rates

If the Fed does not raise rates at its September meeting as it has been warning money manager Michael Pento says, “The Fed is going to lose all their credibility on September 21st. Half of the Fed, and this includes Fed Head Janet Yellen, has been telling you that the economy has healed and they are ready to resume interest rate hikes. If they raise rates, and I don’t think they do, they are not going to be ‘data dependent.’ They are just freaking out about having promised to save the world with four rate hikes in 2016 and garner some credibility before the end of the year. If they don’t raise rates, they are going to lose all their credibility anyway because they have been threatening to do so. If they do raise rates, they are going to lose credibility because (the economy is sinking) and they are not ‘data dependent.’ The data here in the United States is screaming recession. . . . If they raise rates, they are going to absolutely crater the stock market and the bond market. . . .”

If the Fed admits it can’t raise rates, Pento predicts, “Gold is going to become completely unglued from its moorings and will shoot up very close to record highs very quickly. It’s not going to happen until the Fed admits that it cannot raise interest rates.”

Dmitry Shestakov

Arrested January 2007 in Uzbekistan

Released Jan. 21, 2011
On January 21, 2007, Pastor Dmitry “David” Shestakov was arrested in a raid on his Full Gospel Church in Andijan, Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan’s Religious Affairs Committee claims Shestakov, an evangelical pastor affiliated with the registered Full Gospel Church, is not an authorized leader of any officially-recognized religious organization in Uzbekistan. They describe him as an “imposter” leading an underground group identified as “Charismatic Pentecostals” engaged in proselytizing under Shestakov’s leadership. He is appealing his four-year labor camp sentence.

Shestakovs Relocate – August 2016

Pastor Dmitry Shestakov and his family recently arrived in the United States after being granted asylum. The pastor spent four years in a labor camp for his Christian work and continued to be harassed after his release. Though they intended to stay in Uzbekistan, constant persecution by the authorities drove the family to flee to Ukraine three years ago, where they were granted refugee status. Dmitry and his wife, Marina, arrived in Florida on Aug. 30 with their two youngest daughters, Alexandra, 20, and Vera, 16. Their eldest daughter, Maria, 22, stayed in Ukraine with her new husband.

Pastor Dmitry Released

Pastor Dmitry (David) Shestakov was arrested in Andijan, Uzbekistan on Jan. 21, 2007. While he was in a prison labor camp, his wife and his three daughters missed him terribly. Exactly four years later, he was released on Jan. 21, 2011.

Praise God that Pastor Shestakov is now home with his family. Pray for the Shestakovs as they adjust back to life together. Pray also that the church in Andijan will be strengthened.

SUDAN: Severe Penalties for Addressing Persecution

Source: World Watch Monitor

A trial of four men, including two Sudanese church leaders and a foreign aid worker, resumed on August 29th in Khartoum, with Sudan’s prosecution accusing the defendants of highlighting the alleged suffering of Christians in war-ravaged areas of the country.

The four defendants are Hassan Abduraheem Kodi Taour and Kuwa Shamal, pastors originally from the Nuba Mountains of Sudan’s South Kordofan region; Petr Jasek, a Christian aid worker from the Czech Republic; and Abdulmonem Abdumawla Issa Abdumawla, a Darfuri graduate student. The men have been accused of conducting intelligence activities and providing material support for rebels. Some of the charges against them are punishable by death.

During the trial, the prosecutor demanded the harshest punishment, alleging that the defendants claimed the buildings were bombarded by government warplanes. He also purported that the Christian aid worker was planning to go into areas “claimed to have been destroyed by the Sudanese army” with the intent to interview civilians regarding concerns of torturous conduct by Sudanese authorities.

In Sudan, the demolition of churches and arrests of Christians have increased since 72-year-old President Omar al-Bashir began reasserting Sharia law. Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity. Sudan currently is ranked eighth on Open Doors’ World Watch List of the 50 countries where Christians face the most severe persecution. For more information on the country of Sudan, click here.

Please pray for the four accused men and their families as they endure the ongoing court proceedings and allegations presented against them. As greater awareness of their case becomes known internationally, may fellow believers around the world join in the prayer vigil on their behalf, petitioning our Righteous Judge for their safety and a just outcome. Pray for a miraculous turnaround of this case, and that the Sudanese president and his government officials will come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ who loves and values human lives. Let’s also widen our prayers by lifting up to the Lord all of His followers who are suffering persecution in Sudan, especially those in the Nuba Mountain region where Christian communities have been harassed for so many years.

KAZAKHSTAN: Summer Camps Disbanded by Authorities

Source: Forum 18

Two congregations belonging to the Baptist Union in West Kazakhstan Region were raided by government officials in July as they held summer camps for children. Officials and local journalists claimed that: 1) the churches were trying to attract young people, 2) some of the children may have been present at a religious event without their parents’ consent, and 3) foreigners present as “missionaries” didn’t have the required state permission.

Light of the Gospel Baptist Church in Oral held its five-day children’s camp within the church building from July 4th to 8th, hosting teenagers in the morning and younger children in the afternoon. Most were the children of congregation members, but the ministry team had also invited youngsters from the wider community. Invitations were distributed and a poster was placed outside the building to indicate clearly that the event was organized by the church and that Bible reading would take place.

“Officials from the Regional Religious Affairs Department and the Regional Education Department turned up on three of the days that week during the sessions for younger children,” Pastor Aleksandr Dimitrov states. “They were accompanied by a number of journalists. On the Friday, two police officers even joined them.” The pastor further explains that all of the children were present with their parents’ permission, but refused to show such permission to officials.

Khabar television carried a short hostile news report about the summer camp, including interviews with Bayangul Semgaliyeva, a representative of the Regional Religious Affairs Department, who led the raid; and Oksana Dementievskaya, a journalist who was featured as a “local resident.” The news report carried the caption: “Children are being attracted to non-traditional religious organizations.” Other reports on persecution in this country may be reviewed here.

Thank you for upholding our brothers and sisters in Kazakhstan who are facing opposition for their faithful efforts to reach others for Christ. Pray that Christians throughout the country will be allowed freedom to practice and share their faith. May the spiritual seeds of the teachings take root deeply within the hearts of the local children so these youngsters can grow strong in their relationship with our Lord Jesus. Pray that the local officials and journalists would recognize the error of their negative reporting, compelling them to instead seek the saving truth of God’s Word.

SRI LANKA: Village Christians Granted Freedom to Worship

On July 16th, while Sunday School classes were in progress, 12 members of the Young Men’s Buddhist Association arrived at a church to proclaim that the children should not be taught Christianity in a Buddhist village. They also claimed that the pastor and his ministry workers were unethically and forcibly converting the residents of the village.

While the worship service was in progress, about 30 villagers and two Buddhist monks gathered around the church premises. A few members of the group joined the monks as they entered the church and falsely accused the pastor of unethically converting people. They demanded that the pastor and his congregation stop their worship activities immediately and leave the village. They also threatened violence if the pastor and members of the church did not comply.

Following the incident, the pastor and a ministry worker went to the area police station to present a complaint. At this point, they were initially refused but were asked to return when the officer-in-charge was present. The next morning, when two pastors and a ministry worker arrived at the police station for an inquiry with a sub-inspector, the senior Buddhist monk from the village temple and two other villagers were also present. The monk said Christians should not be allowed to practice their faith in the village, including reading their Bibles and praying in their own homes.

In an unexpected act of freedom and enforcement of current laws, the sub-inspector stated that all citizens are guaranteed the right to religious freedom in the constitution. Let us praise the Lord for the sub-inspector’s diplomatic stance and for granting these Christians the freedom to worship!

Warren Pollock-US Twilight Zone of Pre-Collapse Just like Rome

Financial and geopolitical analyst Warren Pollock says, “Where we are is more important than where we will be because right now, we are in sort of a Twilight Zone of transition between stability and instability. I think this is a dangerous time, and for some, it will be more dangerous than the actual collapse. . . . The question being asked is ‘when is the collapse going to happen?’ We are in a worse period. It’s a pre-collapse period. This is what happened before WWII. This is what happened before Rome fell. It was a period in time where things worked sort of, a sort of function and a sort of dysfunction. There has always been racketeering in our economy and in our society. It’s human nature, but here’s the difference. In a society that’s functioning, the society can survive with some percentage of racketeering. Right now, racketeering is so pervasive you cannot do the things in society for that society to function.”

RUSSIA: “Anti-Sharing Beliefs” Law Commences

Source: Forum 18

The first known punishments of the “Anti-Sharing Beliefs” law have now been handed down under Russia’s new amendments which came into force on July 20th. Three of the four citizens known to have been charged so far under the new provisions are Christians: Ebenezer Tuah, Aleksandr Yakimov, and Donald Ossewaarde.

Christ Embassy leader Ebenezer Tuah, a Ghanaian citizen living in Russia on an educational visa, was fined on August 1st after police and government officials raided a sanatorium in the city where he was performing baptisms. According to the court verdict, the Christian leader “conducted religious rites and ceremonies, including religious gatherings, posted information about his beliefs on the Internet with the aim of propagandizing, and carried out missionary activity (in)…the city of Tver without the required documents and not in the conditions provided for by (the Religion Law).”

Aleksandr Yakimov leads the local New Generation Pentecostal community in Mari-Turek. On August 3rd, Aleksandr took part in an annual festival hosted by the village of Mari-Sholner. According to the district prosecutor’s office, he spoke from a stage that had a banner bearing the name of his church. On August 5th, officials charged Aleksandr with “conducting missionary activity in violation of (the Religion Law).”

On August 14th, an independent Baptist preacher, Donald Ossewaarde, a United States citizen who has lived in Oryol since 2005, was brought before a hastily-arranged hearing at the city’s Railway District Court. Donald was fined for holding religious services in his home and for allegedly advertising them on the bulletin boards of nearby housing blocks. He was charged the same day and given no time to summon his own lawyer.

President Vladimir Putin signed the “anti-sharing beliefs” amendments into law on July 6th as part of Russia’s “anti-terrorism” legislation. The section introducing new restrictions on “missionary” activity triggered protest from religious leaders and human rights activists. Mikhail Fedotov, Chair of the Presidential Council on Civil Society Development and Human Rights, complained to President Putin on July 1st. He told the president that the amendments “create unjustified and excessive restrictions on the freedom of conscience of believers of all religions, and encroach upon the fundamental constitutional principle of non-interference by the state….”

God’s Word states that “Light is shed upon the righteous and joy on the upright in heart” (Psalm 97:11) May the light demonstrated by His faithful servants in Russia shine so brightly that the people of their communities — including those opposing them — will recognize the glorious power of His Son Jesus operating in and through their lives. We pray that as a result of His manifested presence, many more will acknowledge Him as Saviour and Lord, and that spiritual revival will take place within this country in the time leading up to His imminent return.

NIGERIA: Mass Riots Result in Tragic Loss

On August 21st, a Christian student of Abdu Gusau Polytechnic in Talata Mafara, Zamfara State, had allegedly made a blasphemous statement. He was then beaten almost to the point of death by some angered Muslim students. A fellow Christian was able to rush him to the hospital with the help of a compassionate Muslim who volunteered the use of his car.

The following morning, a mob of militants gathered in the community, insisting that the Christian student be killed. They went around the school, burning down the Christian fellowship secretariats. Then they proceeded to town, destroying churches and threatening to kill any Christian who ever decides to return to Talata Mafara. Unfortunately, the mob later set ablaze the house where the victimized student had taken refuge, burning him and seven others to death.

President Muhammadu Buhari describes the killings that took place as barbaric and unacceptable: “I received news of the mob killings in Zamfara with great dismay…. I assure that the law will take its course. My prayers are with the families of the victims. Under my watch we will work to ensure that there is no place for violence in the name of religion, ethnicity, or in any guise whatsoever.” Other reports revealing the seriousness of Nigeria’s situation may be reviewed here.

May our loving God, who promises to be close to the brokenhearted, bring greatly needed consolation to all who have suffered loss during the riots. Especially uphold the families, friends and community members of those who’ve tragically lost their lives, praying that His peace, strength and comfort will sustain them in the midst of their grief. Ask for the Lord’s conviction to be upon the perpetrators so they will realize the seriousness of their hateful actions and their desperate need for His forgiveness and salvation. Also intercede on behalf of Nigeria’s president and others in governmental authority who need wisdom, guidance and help as they strategize effective ways to combat the violence and protect their citizens.

PAKISTAN: Asia Bibi’s October Appeal

Sources: CBN News, The Christian Post, International Christian Concern

Asia Bibi, a Pakistani Christian woman sentenced to death for blasphemy against Islam, will fight for her freedom in court this October. Asia was convicted of blasphemy in 2010 after Muslim women told a cleric in a village of the eastern Punjab province that she had made “derogatory remarks” about the prophet.

Since her arrest in 2009, the international community has pressured Pakistan’s strict government, calling for Asia’s release and reforms to be made to the blasphemy laws. Although her appeal was scheduled for March 26th of this year, rising tensions and protests against it from Pakistan’s Muslim community delayed the hearing until October.

Asia has been sitting in prison for almost seven years, and reports have indicated that the health of the 51-year-old mother has been deteriorating. As the blasphemy law in Pakistan is often abused by Muslims to settle personal scores with Christians and other religious minorities, international religious freedom advocates have asserted that the charge against Asia is trumped up and have called for the Pakistani government to immediately release her. For previous reports on Asia’s ongoing case, click here.

Ask that the Lord will grant favour to Asia and her legal representatives as they mediate for justice and mercy on her behalf. May the court be impartial and not be swayed by prejudicial arguments or protests, nor respond in fear to opposing militants. Continue to pray for Asia’s health and protection, as well as the safety of her family and all who are trying to assist her. Intercede for the Pakistanis who are wishing her harm by wrongfully taking “justice” into their own hands. Pray that they would be under the conviction of the one true God who longs for His love and salvation to be experienced by all of humanity (John 3:16).
