The Imperial Presidency

Mark Steyn:

Rick Perry, governor of Texas, has only been in the presidential race for 20 minutes, but he’s already delivered one of the best lines in the campaign:

“I’ll work every day to try to make Washington, D.C., as inconsequential in your life as I can.”

This will be grand news to Schylar Capo, eleven years old, of Virginia, who made the mistake of rescuing a woodpecker from the jaws of a cat and nursing him back to health for a couple of days, and for her pains, was visited by a federal Fish & Wildlife gauleiter (with accompanying state troopers) who charged her with illegal transportation of a protected species and issued her a $535 fine. If the federal child-abuser has that much time on his hands, he should have charged the cat, who was illegally transporting the protected species from his gullet to his intestine.

So eleven-year-old Schylar and other middle-schoolers targeted by the micro-regulatory superstate might well appreciate Governor Perry’s pledge. But you never know, it might just catch on with the broader population, too.

Obama Is Not As Incompetent As He Appears To Be

by Thomas E. Brewton:

Obama’s destructive policies aren’t attributable as much to incompetence as to malice aforethought. They arise from the Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn Weatherman underground hatred of the United States that impels liberal-progressive-socialists to destroy constitutional government in order to replace it with collectivist tyranny.

Frank Madarasz forwarded these links to the American Thinker and The Washington Times:

Quote:

Obama is not a failure at his job—his job is the failure of our country.

Matthews tries but can’t shake RNC Chair Reince Priebus

by The Right Scoop:

I’m posting this, not because Matthews is a jerk – that goes without saying – but because Reince Priebus is so much better in tough interviews than the last RNC Chair we had, who would have totally thrown the party under the bus. Not Priebus. He stood his ground and kept swinging at Obama every chance he got.

If you can make it to the end, you’ll see what I’m talking about. Priebus was fantastic.

Obama and the Class Envy Card

By Steve McCann:

Barack Obama, the Left and the Democrats are determined to continue their never-ending and over-used drum beat of “raise taxes on the rich.” While of little practical value in solving the nation’s overwhelming debt and deficit problem, this siren song aims to foster class envy, intimidate opponents and foment potential violence. It is the action of a desperate administration and party attempting to obfuscate their abject failure in growing the economy and creating jobs.

The IRS issues a report every year analyzing the tax filings, receipts and payment by income groups. The report for 2009 has just been issued. It fully contradicts the mantra of the Left that by taxing the so-called “rich” the United States could solve its deficit problem without severe cuts in spending.

Global warming runs out of gas

Rex Murphy:

It is not a pretty display. The question the sorry little rant calls up is whether, in its way, this temper fit was a signal that the great global warming crusade, that has had such a sweet run for the last decade or more, is finally over. Has it run, so to speak, out of gas?

The signs are everywhere that it has. Here in Canada, for example, how far are we from those days when Stéphane Dion was the freshly-minted leader of the Liberal party, having ascended to that dubious altitude largely on the pledge that he was going to build a “green” Canada. It was telling that within the Liberal party at that time featly to a drastic and nebulous green agenda was enough to grab the leadership prize away from the perceived stronger candidates, Bob Rae and Michael Ignatieff. As so often happens, however, much as they are embraced by celebrities and touted by inside “experts,” when so-called green politics are placed before the people those politics and the people who espouse them are forcefully rejected.

After the Massacre: Anti-Semitism, Islam, and Norway

by Stefan Frank:

Dr. Michal Rachel Suissa is a Jewish Amazigh (Berber) refugee from Morocco, working as an associate professor in medicinal chemistry at University College of Oslo. She regularly lectures and has written many articles on minorities in the Middle East, human rights in the Muslim world, and the use of religion as a weapon against Jews and minorities. She is the director of the Center Against Anti-Semitism (CAA) and the editor of the quarterly magazine SMA-Info on Israel and Anti-Semitism. I asked her a few question regarding racism, anti-Semitism, and Islam in Norway.

[…]

What does the Utoya massacre mean for Norway’s Jewish community?

Suissa: The majority of Jews in Norway try to conceal their Jewish identity. We have three very small congregations which represent a few hundred observant Jews. For the time being there is a full silence, as most Jews have reacted instinctively with fear, afraid of becoming victims of the ongoing blame game. I know this for fact, as some of them have let me know in private conversations. The media were quick to make headlines of the allegation that the murderer was “pro-Israeli.” I see this as part of the massive media propaganda to silence the “right-wing” opposition, which is also generally positive towards Israel.

[…]

One of the more long-term negative consequences of this brutal terrorist act in Norway is a limitation of the freedom of speech. People have become terrified of being connected to the mass-murderer, whom the media describe as a “conservative Christian fundamentalist.” This tag is sufficient to paralyze half of the Norwegian population, where the majority of the supporters of Israel and the Jews are found. At present we observe a form of slanderous media defamation of Christians which in some cases has already acquired an eerie resemblance to classical anti-Semitism. This witch hunt, spreading like a steppe fire, has already paralyzed conservative bloggers in this country, and I fear others will also suffer before the media may end up with the classical compromise of blaming the Jews.
