Greece’s crisis may come here

Michael A. Walsh:

Welcome to the beginning of the end of the welfare state.

Since the Marshall Plan, which got the war-torn continent back on its feet, Western Europe has lived in a bubble. Shielded by US nuclear arms and guarded by hundreds of thousands of American troops, Europeans have been free to create their quasi-socialist paradises.

It was fun while it lasted: Spend the first 30 years of your life as a “student,” enter the workforce late, retire early, get six-week vacations at taxpayers’ expense and lavish 30-year pensions — la dolce vita had nothing on this.

The welfare-state mentality reached its zenith with the creation of the European Union and its currency, the euro, which yoked countries as disparate as Ireland, Estonia, Monaco, Germany and Greece. Ever since, legions of Eurocrats in Brussels have spent their days churning out endless miles of choking red tape as they perfected their cradle-to-grave cocoon.

Flotilla II: The Merchant Ships of Hamas Propaganda

by Joseph Klein:

The pro-Hamas flotilla of international ships planning to defy Israel’s lawful naval blockade of Gaza is getting underway, despite some delays caused by insurance and mechanical problems. Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman was spot on when he told Israel Radio that the so-called Freedom Flotilla II participants are nothing more than “terror activists, seeking to create provocation and looking for blood.”

The merchant ships of Hamas propaganda are supporting the terrorist organization that is the governing authority in Gaza and whose covenant calls for the killing of all Jews, the destruction of Israel, and the replacement of Israel with an Islamic state. The flotilla’s purpose is to rally international public opinion against the legitimacy of Israel as a Jewish state, striving to achieve on the propaganda front what Hamas is aiming to do with rockets and suicide bombers.

How Billionaire George Gund III Funds Jew-Hate

by David Swindle:

In spite of their supposed sympathy for outsiders, the couple chooses to focus most of their activist money against the most tolerant Middle Eastern state. Israel is their primary target. The couple is completely indifferent to the reality that the rights of gays, women and religious minorities are protected more diligently in this supposedly “apartheid” state than in Hamas-controlled Gaza. Thus, the Iara Lee and George Gund III Foundation (ILGGF) (founded 2004) and the Caipirinha Foundation (founded 2006) have funneled more than half a million dollars to activist groups committed to demonizing Israel and supporting Hamas.

The most troubling of Lee and Gund’s anti-Israel donations has been the Caipirinha Foundation’s grant to the The Foundation for Human Rights and Freedom and Humanitarian Relief (IHH) which sponsors flotillas that seek to disrupt Israel’s military blockade of Gaza. The IHH also has ties to Hamas, Al Qaeda, and the Muslim Brotherhood, a fact which prevented the IHH from participating in the next flotilla scheduled for the end of this month. Lee has defended the IHH in a video and blog post at The Huffington Post.

A Major U.S. Policy Shift Toward the Muslim Brotherhood Disguised

by Barry Rubin:

Here’s the headline: “U.S. to resume formal Muslim Brotherhood contacts.” But that’s not true. In fact, as the Reuters article itself admits, there have never been “formal” contacts before but only informal ones. Let’s examine the language, which stems from a “senior U.S. official,” to see what the Obama administration thinks about the Muslim Brotherhood:

A step that reflects the Islamist group’s growing political weight but that is almost certain to upset Israel and its U.S. backers.

Note how it is portrayed as an Israel-related issue. Won’t it upset people who care about U.S. interests? Won’t it upset Egyptian Christians? The Saudis and Jordanians and other relatively moderate Arab regimes? Won’t it upset Muslims who oppose revolutionary Islamism?

We are supposed to believe that only Israel and the Jews will be upset about the Obama administration moving closer to a radical antisemitic, anti-Christian, anti-American, anti-Western, pro-terrorist group that wants to repress women, kill gays, and overturn pretty much every existing government in the region. But just those Jews and their friends will be upset. You know, just like in the 1930s when certain people said that opposition to the totalitarian threat of those years was just coming from the Jews.

He fears nothing from prayerless studies, prayerless work and
prayerless religion.

He laughs at our toil, mocks at our wisdom, but trembles when we
pray.”

1. Update: Iranian pastor’s death sentence upheld

(Sources: Present Truth Ministries, VOM sources)

The death sentence of Youcef Nardarkhani, an Iranian pastor convicted
of apostasy, has been upheld and confirmed by the Iranian Supreme
Court. Pastor Youcef, a leader in the Full Gospel “Church of Iran”
network, was arrested and imprisoned in October 2009 after protesting
a decision by the government requiring that his son study the Qur’an
(see http://www.persecution.net/ir-2010-12-09.htm
for more). In September, Iran’s 11th Circuit Criminal Court of
Appeals for the Gilan Province upheld Pastor Youcef’s death sentence
and conviction for apostasy. The delivery of the death sentence,
however, was delayed. Many believe the delay was a means to pressure
him to him to turn away from Christ in prison. With the sentence now
upheld and confirmed, it is possible that the authorities will ask him
to recant his faith and execute him without advance notice if he
refuses — a typical pattern of action taken by authorities in such
cases. If Pastor Youcef is indeed executed, his would be the first
judicial execution of a Christian in Iran in two decades. He is but
one of several members of his church who have been arrested by Iranian
officials, and his wife has also spent time in prison because of her
faith in Christ.

Pray that God will continue to equip Pastor Youcef to stand firm in
his faith. Pray that he will sense the love and support of all those
praying for him and working on his behalf. Pray that the Iranian
authorities involved will be convicted of their injustice and overturn
the case. Pray for comfort to abound in the hearts and minds of Pastor
Youcef’s wife and children.

2. Christians tortured and killed in South Sudan

(Source: Compass Direct)

Government agents and Islamic militants recently launched deadly
attacks on Christians in Sudan’s South Kordofan state. On June 8, a
Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) Intelligence unit detained a seminary
student, Nimeri Philip Kalo, near the United Nations Mission in Sudan
(UNMIS) in the capital city of Kadugli. Nimeri and other Christians
were fleeing the town after Muslim militias loyal to the SAF attacked
and looted at least three local churches. The agents reportedly
accused Nimeri of being a Christian and suspected he was therefore
opposed to the Islamic government. The UNMIS’s mandate is to support
the Comprehensive Peace Agreement between the Government of Sudan and
the country’s Christian and animist south, which is scheduled to
secede on July 9 (see http://www.persecution.net/sd-2011-06-16.htm
for more information). Nimeri was killed in front of several
bystanders. “They shot him in front of our eyes and forced us not to
cry, or else we would face the same fate,” said one witness.

The same day, Islamic militants aligned with SAF killed a Christian
bus driver, Adeeb Gismalla Aksam (33), by sword in the Kadugli Market.
That afternoon, other armed militants attacked a Roman Catholic Church
building where Christians were gathered for mass, firing guns and
shouting “Allahu-akbar.” No one was injured, but SAF agents arrested
Reverend Abraham James Lual in front of his congregation. They accused
Abraham of preaching that people should oppose the Islamic government
and took him to an unknown location. He was tortured for two days
before being released.

Pray for healing for Abraham. Pray for God’s enduring comfort to reign
in the hearts of the friends and family members of the martyred
believers. Pray that their example of costly discipleship will enrich
the witness of the Sudanese Church. Pray that Sudanese Christians will
continue to trust in God’s love and provision, even in times of
instability, violence and loss.

3. Pastor killed in Borno state, Nigeria

(Sources: Compass Direct)

Two Christians were recently killed by members of the Islamist sect
Boko Haram in the northeastern town of Maiduguri, Nigeria. Pastor
David Usman (45) and Hamman Andrew, the church secretary, were shot
dead near the church in an area of Maiduguri called the Railway
Quarters. In 2009, when the church was set on fire by militants,
Pastor David had reportedly raised the problem of Boko Haram with his
superiors and commented that the Government needed to do more to stop
their aggression.

Boko Haram, a sect committed to extending strict Islamic or Sharia law
across Nigeria, has been responsible for several recent attacks in the
region, including deadly bombings. The violence has been widely
interpreted as a protest against April’s national elections, which
returned Christian incumbent Goodluck Jonathan to power. The fighting
has left many in the Christian community terrified for their lives.
“We no longer feel free moving around the city and most churches no
longer carry out worship services for fear of becoming targets of
these unprovoked attacks,” said one local pastor.

Thank the Lord for the life and faith of Pastor David and Hamman. Ask
God to surround their grieving loved ones with his comfort. Pray that
Nigerian Christians will be emboldened and sustained by the Holy
Spirit as they serve the Lord in a climate of intense violence. Pray
that those who persecute Christians in Nigeria will repent and embrace
Christ as Lord.

4. Update: Harassment continues for Shouwang Church in Beijing, China

(Source: ChinaAid Association)

Members of the Shouwang Church in Beijing, China have been arrested
and repeatedly harassed by authorities for their attempt to hold
outdoor Sunday worship in recent months (see

http://www.persecution.net/cn-2011-05-19a.htm

for more information). In the latest such incident, 15 Christians
were detained for gathering at the church’s designated outdoor worship
site on June 26. Several of the detained believers were visiting from
other churches, including one woman who had traveled from Henan
province to show her support. Police had reportedly stopped two other
Christian women from another house church from leaving their home to
visit the worship site. By 9:00 p.m. that evening, all of the
believers were released.

In another development, pastors belonging to China’s official
Three-Self Patriotic Movement recently sought out Shouwang Church
members for long sessions of “pastoral counseling” on the government’s
behalf. Three-Self representatives were also on hand a few weeks ago
when police interrogated detained members of the Shouwang Church about
the theological basis for the church’s actions.

Thank the Lord for the faithful witness of these Christians. Pray that
the Shouwang Church members will continue to look to God to keep them
strong and vigorous in spirit. Pray they may be a challenging example
of love and hope to those who oppose them. Pray that Christ will
continue to equip Chinese Christians to follow His example of
faithfulness amid persecution (2 Corinthians 1:8-9)

faith at great cost at http://www.persecution.net/china.htm

5. Uzbek Christian threatened by police

(Source: Forum 18)

A Christian man is facing threats and harassment from police in
Tashkent, Uzbekistan for challenging a fine he received for his
religious activity. In April, Anvar Rajapov was fined 80 times the
minimum monthly wage after police raided his home and confiscated
literature. In an attempt to stop Anvar from appealing against the
police actions and court decisions, local police summoned him to the
police station in late May. An officer then threatened Anvar with
violence if he challenged the hefty fine. “I have prepared an axe for
you, which will be flying after you, observing you, and if need be get
you,” the officer reportedly said. Anvar has since made written
complaints about his treatment to President Islam Karimov, the Supreme
Court, and other state agencies. Court officials have warned him that
if he did not pay the fine by June 15 he would be fined again. At last
report, Anvar had been summoned in writing to the bailiff’s office.

Pray for endurance of faith for Anvar amid opposition. Pray that he
will be a confident witness for the Lord (Matthew 10:19-20). Pray
those in authority will recognize the lack of religious freedom in
Uzbekistan and make changes accordingly.

MK Shills For Anti-Semite in Guardian

by Simon Plosker:

Those who accuse Israel of being an “apartheid” state are often silenced by the revelation that Israeli Arabs have their own political parties and are elected to Israel’s parliament, the Knesset.

Even more astounding to the uneducated is the tolerance of the Israeli democratic system that allows Arab MKs to attack and slander the country at every opportunity.

Such is the case with MK Haneen Zoabi writing in The Guardian on the arrest in the UK of Islamic Movement in Israel leader Sheikh Raed Salah.

The Guardian has given a platform for Zoabi to act as an apologist for a virulent anti-Semitic extremist, to attack what she sees as Zionist and Israeli “racism” and to accuse pro-Israel advocates in the UK of being behind Raed Salah’s current difficulties.

The Obamayyad of Barry Hussein

By James Lewis:

Jimmy Carter and his National Security Advisor, Zbig Brzezinski, are personally responsible for the Islamic radicalization of the Middle East — by pulling the Persian rug out from our loyal ally, the Shah of Iran, and letting mass-murdering thug Ayatollah Khomeini take over a country of 70 million people. Khomeini’s Iran was the first big Islamofascist coup d’état, which made the Turks feel nostalgic for the good old days when the Ottomans creatively murdered everybody in sight, including women, slaves, Christians in Bulgaria, Jews on general principle, and Shiite Muslims for heresy. It was the Ottomans who settled their succession struggles by ritually strangling the male relatives of any new Sultan. The ritual bowstring was the only answer to endless palace rebellions and civil wars if the brothers and cousins were allowed to live.

The Netherlands Cuts Funding from Anti-Israel NGOs

by Soeren Kern:

The Dutch Foreign Ministry says it will implement “sweeping reforms” to prevent the transfer of millions of taxpayer euros from going to Dutch humanitarian aid organizations that fund anti-Israel boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) activities and non-government organizations (NGOs) that deny Israel’s right to exist.

The move comes after Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal discovered that previous governments had allocated at least €10 million ($15 million) to Dutch and Palestinian groups promoting BDS activities against Israel.

Evil

If anyone in this country deserves the right to have prayers and religious speech, take place over their graves, it is those who have sacrificed the most. The ban on “God” at these funerals is an insult — not only to Christians, but, more importantly, to our military Christians. How very shameful it is that this attack comes from within the Veterans Administration itself.

Missile Defense Malpractice

IBD:

As Iran tests its latest long-range missiles, a senator says a Pentagon study shows the White House’s decision to let Moscow have a veto on missile defense has left us with systems that are “simply not credible.”

When President Obama scrapped, at Russian insistence, President George W. Bush’s plans for a European-based missile defense to protect America and Europe against the Iranian nuclear missile threat, he said it was because he had a better idea with better systems.

But portions of a forthcoming study by the Pentagon’s Defense Science Board, disclosed during a hearing of the Senate Appropriations defense subcommittee by Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., says the Obama plan, employing what’s called a phased-adaptive approach, won’t work.

“Phased-adaptive approach,” government speak for “making it up as we go along while we kick the can down the road,” is a four-phase plan that calls for using three versions of the Navy’s Standard SM-3 interceptor missile that’s the foundation of its Aegis missile defense.

U.S. Designates Israel as Country That Tends ‘To Promote, Produce, or Protect’ Terrorists; Also Calls Israel Anti-Terror Partner

By Edwin Mora:

In an implicit admission that Israel is so threatened by terrorism that it is not only surrounded by countries and territories that produce terrorists but also unwillingly harbors terrorists within its own territory in a way the most other nations in the world do not, the Obama administration is currently listing Israel among 36 “specially designated countries” it believes “have shown a tendency to promote, produce, or protect terrorist organizations or their members.”

Why Inflation May Explode When Business Revives

by Thomas E. Brewton:

The Fed has stupendously expanded the monetary base. When interest rates begin to rise and banks begin to lend to consumers and businesses, the monetary stock will balloon and consumer and producer prices will soar.

The alternative is the Fed’s draining trillions of dollars of excess reserves from the banking system, raising interest rates to such high levels that the economic recovery will be choked.

Disproportionate number of child sex offenders ‘are Asian men’

By Daily Mail:

A disproportionate number of child sex offenders ‘are Asian men’ a survey appears to suggest.

The report was undertaken after the conviction of the ringleaders of a grooming gang in Derbyshire which preyed on girls aged between 12 and 18.

Half of the 2,379 offenders identified in the research revealed today by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre gave their ethnicity, with 26 per cent of those being Asian and 38 per cent white.

This compares with the general population of the UK which is around 90 per cent white and about four per cent Asian.

Controversy erupted over the ethnicity issue when former justice secretary Jack Straw accused some Pakistani men in Britain of seeing white girls as ‘easy meat’ for sexual abuse.

[...]

Generally speaking in the UK the term ‘asian’ refers to Pakistani muslims. Euphemisms are commonly employed so as to appear politically correct.

The Gaza Flotilla and Lawfare

By David French:

Yesterday, while driving near Denver, I caught a lengthy NPR report on the latest Gaza Flotilla. This year’s (potentially deadly) episode of protest theater stars not only Code Pink founder Medea Benjamin but also noted author Alice Walker. Walker is sailing because — and I am not making this up – she loves “children,” “water,” “trees,” and “parents who are happy.” I love those things as well, but for some reason I don’t feel compelled to support terrorists against our close democratic allies.

While the flotilla is obviously intended as a public-relations challenge to Israel, it has a not-so-hidden legal element as well. For years, the Left has tried to narrow and constrict the law of armed conflict so that it effectively denies Israel (and, by extension, the U.S.) the ability to conduct effective combat operations against jihadists. And while the legality of military blockades against belligerents is well-established under the laws of war, the Left essentially and functionally denies that a state of armed conflict or actual “war” exists against Hamas.

Take a moment, then, to consider visiting the new website of conservative Daily Mail columnist, author and blogger Melanie Phillips. Ms. Phillips just exited the Spectator’s blog under highly shrouded circumstances. Fleet Street is abuzz.

Was it journalistic error? Or political persecution? It’s simply impossible to get at the facts.

At the bottom of it all appears to be the British ruling class’ eroding support for Israel — a phenomenon not unknown elsewhere in the West. Like Caroline Glick at the Jerusalem Post and Pam Geller of atlasshrugs.com, Ms. Phillips has proved herself to be a great Lioness of Judah in resisting the rot. As such, in today’s Western Europe, Melanie Phillips stands out.

Palin Taken Aback at the Hate in Her Documentary’s Opening

by Jonathon M. Seidl:

When Sarah Palin showed up in Pella, IA to attend a screening of her own documentary, “The Undefeated,” she hadn’t seen all the footage beforehand. So when the film opened with people calling her “slutty,“ ”scary,“ and a ”bit**,” she was a little taken aback.

“This is the first that I’ve seen much of that. It kind of takes you back,” she told The Hollywood Reporter (THR). “It makes you want to reach out to some of these folks and say, What’s your problem? And what was the problem? And what is the problem?”

THR describes the graphic opening:

The movie begins with Sen. John McCain introducing his running mate, then quickly cuts to the Hollywood sign, and the music turns ominous. A TV news anchor says, “Hollywood has a new favorite pastime: taking aim at Sarah Palin.”

Then the celebrity montage begins: Damon likens Palin to a “really bad Disney movie” and says she’s “really scary” and Letterman calls her ”slutty,” and the discourse descends in to the filthy from there. Maher calls her a “dumb twat” on his TV show, Madonna screams “Sarah [Fu**ing] Palin” while on stage, and comedians use graphic, severely bleeped language to describe how Palin gave birth to a “retard.”

UNDER PERSECUTION

Youcef Nadarkhani

Location: Iran (Islamic Republic of)
Arrested: October 2010
Days Imprisoned: 261

Youcef Nadarkhani, a 34-year-old pastor from Rasht, about 750 miles northwest of Tehran, was arrested in October 2009 after he protested a government policy that required children, including his 8- and 9-year-old sons, to study the Quran in school. Youcef told school officials that the Iranian constitution allows for freedom of religious practice. As a result of his protest, secret police called him before a political tribunal and arrested him for protesting. The charges were later amended to apostasy and evangelism of Muslims. Youcef was tried on Sept. 21–22, 2010 by the 1st Court of the Revolutionary Tribunal and sentenced to death on Nov. 13 for apostasy.

The pastor is imprisoned in Lakan prison, where authorities have used various methods, including medication, to convert him back to Islam.

After Youcef refused to convert to Islam, his wife was arrested, put on trial without an attorney and sentenced to life in prison. She was later released after an attorney appealed her sentence. The Nadarkhanis’ children were cared for by a relative while they were both in prison.

Death Sentence Upheld
The Iranian Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence of Pastor Youcef. He has been in prison since October 2009, and the appeal of his death sentence was rejected by the Iranian Supreme Court on June 28, 2011. He is to be executed by hanging. If the death sentence is carried out, it will be the first court-ordered execution of a Christian in Iran in 20 years.

The Flotilla Jihadists’ Artsy Propagandist and Her Billionaire Husband

by David Swindle:

When the Hamas-linked Foundation for Human Rights and Freedom and Humanitarian Relief (IHH) sponsored a “humanitarian” flotilla last summer to try and break the Israeli “siege” of Gaza, the purpose was not merely to engineer a showdown between Israeli commandos and armed IHH “peace activists.” Far more vital to the IHH’s cause was the ensuing campaign to demonize Israel in the international media, a campaign in which propagandists such as documentary filmmaker Iara Lee played a key role.

Lee later appropriated the language of the American Civil Rights Movement to describe herself and the IHH:
