Meanwhile, in other news…

By Daniel Hannan:

Many alternative and herbal medicines disappeared from the shelves today. New EU rules have proscribed some remedies outright and subjected others to a prohibitively expensive testing regime. The BBC, in its tagline, unquestioningly described the Directive as “protecting consumers”. In fact, the ban has nothing to do with public health, and everything to do with corporate interests.

Tea Partier to MSNBCer: Media That Blame All Criticism of Obama on His Skin Color Are ‘Racers’

By Noel Sheppard:
You’ve heard of Birthers and Truthers.

Tea Partier and talk radio host Tony Katz on Thursday, while appearing on MSNBC News Live Contessa Brewer, called media members that blame all criticism of Barack Obama on the color of his skin “Racers” (video follows with transcript and commentary):

TONY KATZ, TEA PARTIER: This is Obama failing to do his job.

CONTESSA BREWER, MSNBC HOST: That’s what a lot of people are saying it’s not a laughing matter. They say that there are questions about him, not because there really are questions about where he is born, but because he is black. […]

KATZ: But this whole idea of race, you know what, if there are birthers and they’re all crazy and silly for actually wanting to see a birth certificate, well let’s talk about the racers, the people who believe that everything is a conspiracy about race. It’s Obama’s race that people want to see the birth certificate. It’s Obama’s race that people don’t like the out of control spending. It’s not his race. It’s that he’s awful. The policies are terrible. ObamaCare is a lie and a failure. QE1 and QE2 didn’t work. It’s crazy.

Egypt warns Israel: Don’t interfere with opening of Gaza border crossing

Haaretz:

Rafah’s opening would be a violation of an agreement reached in 2005 between the United States, Israel, Egypt, and the European Union, which gives EU monitors access to the crossing. The monitors were to reassure Israel that weapons and militants wouldn’t get into Gaza after its pullout from the territory in the fall of 2005.

Time to Pull The Cloak of Invisibility Off Of Black Conservatives

By Lloyd Marcus:

CNN traveled with us on Tea Party Express, to approximately 40 rallies nationwide. I, a black conservative, opened each rally singing my “American Tea Party Anthem”. And yet, not I nor any of the other blacks on our team were seen in the CNN documentary; thus, causing viewers to conclude the Tea Party Movement is a “white thing.”

For the most part, the liberal media ignores black conservatives. And when they do interview one of us, it is from a, “Can you believe this stupid Uncle Tom,” point of view.

Unfortunately, conservative media and most tea party organizers do not seem to grasp the strategic wisdom in featuring and supporting black conservatives.

The Palestinian Authority: What Obama Is Missing

By Arlene Kushner:

Well-placed leaks within the last few days suggest that President Obama may be about to announce a proposal for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. One of the plan’s tenets is expected to be acceptance of the 1967 armistice line (the Green Line) as Israel’s final border.

A handful of recent events speak directly to the wisdom — or lack thereof — of such a proposal:

Regulation: While we were distracted by the president’s birth certificate show-and-tell, his EPA releases its guidelines for expanding federal power under the Clean Water Act. America’s economy and freedom are at stake.

President Obama’s long-form birth certificate wasn’t the only thing released last Wednesday, but it was probably the least important. The Environmental Protection Agency also released its guidelines for expanding federal power over the nation’s waterways, ponds and puddles.

by The Right Scoop:

I heard this on the radio in my car before lunch and knew this was bound for a post. This mother is taking on her public school to fight the lefty environmental indoctrination of her six year old, and she’s not backing down.

What’s really great in this interview (besides the awesome backbone of mom) is you get to hear her little six year old girl perform 2 of the songs she learned in class, and it’s really cute. The last one happens to be a Wham! remake which is actually pretty funny.

Canada’s Impressive World Leadership Record

by Adam Daifallah:

Those who care about support for democracies abroad and who want a strong ally for the U.S. and freedom around the world ought to be hoping that Canada’s current Conservative Government, under the leadership of Stephen Harper, wins a majority in the election this Monday.

Back in the mid-1980s, it was easy – even fashionable – to mock Canada. It is still often wrongly perceived as a backwater, where people travel by dogsled, enjoy paying high taxes and make good bacon. As late as 1995, the Wall Street Journal wrote that Canada’s dangerously high debt levels made it “an honorary member of the Third World.”

Jack Layton’s lie about Quebeckers funding the oilsands

By Licia Corbella:

Recently Jack Layton, whose popularity is surging in Quebec, told that populous province that Quebeckers are funding the oilsands to the tune of $75 for every man, woman and child as a result of royalty tax breaks.

That is a complete falsehood. Quebec (and many other provinces as well) hasn’t made a net fiscal contribution to the rest of Canada in decades.

For 2010, Albertans paid about $35.6 billion to the federal government in taxes, royalties and other payments. The province got back $21.5 billion in federal services and transfers. In other words, Albertans contributed $14.1 billion to the rest of Canada or $3,785 for every Alberta man, woman and child.

In 2008, Albertans contributed $20 billion net to the rest of Canada. Quebec, in turn received $12.325 Billion.

Rifts in Iran’s Leadership. Plus: Secret Meetings with Obama Admin?

by ‘Reza Kahlili’:

News of an open confrontation between Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has come to light, revealing infighting over the dismissal of the minister of Intelligence by Ahmadinejad. Khamenei opposed the firing.

According to reports, last month Heydar Moslehi — the former minister of Intelligence — presented an extensive report on Ahmadinejad’s political and economic activities to Khamenei. In addition, the report is said to have contained information on a number of serious violations.

In late January/early February, a group calling itself “a trade association” — all of its members belong to security forces close to Ahmadinejad — traveled to Dubai. The group’s announced intentions were to cozy up to a trade association of Iranians in Dubai, and to reveal a plan to open a special office for their economic activities. However, reports claim that they also held clandestine meetings with two American officials with political and military connections.

The report the minister of Intelligence provided — which cautioned of an especially dangerous outcome to these undertakings — is said to have disturbed Khamenei.

Other reports from inside Iran point to the Obama administration’s continuation of privately approaching the Iranian officials, hoping to get them to return to negotiations on the nuclear issues.

A marriage made in hell

Melanie Phillips:

So Molotov and Ribbentrop are alive and well and living in Gaza and Ramallah. The pact between Fatah and Hamas is of course a marriage of convenience, forged solely to help fool the world into accepting a de facto state of Palestine. If such a pact were to last, then of course it would mean the end of Mahmoud Abbas and the economic and social progress that has been made in Ramallah and environs; these would be replaced by the Iranian satrapy of Hamastan, political dissidents thrown off the tops of tall buildings and women subjected to sexual terrorism and Islamic subjugation.

by Humberto Fontova:

The New Black Panther Party threatened Philadelphia voters with billy clubs and Eric Holder’s justice department couldn’t be bothered. CAIR was accused of fundraising for Hamas, and Eric Holder shrugged.

But back when Fidel Castro demanded the return of an escaped slave, Eric Holder snapped to attention, clicked his heels, and sprung to action. Scrupulous legality, we’re given to understand by Mr. Holder, prevents his Department from prosecutions against the New Black Panthers and CAIR.

Fighting Jewish Genocide

by Giulio Meotti, FrontPage:

Only one nation on this planet is regarded as virtually having no civilians: Israel. Back in the 1970s already, international law expert Yoram Dinstein argued that according to UN definitions, terrorism and incitement against Israelis constitutes genocide.

David Ben-Gurion’s famous statement “Oom, Shmoom,” meaning “The UN – who cares?” summed up Israel’s indifference to world opinion in the past. It has been a failed policy as Israel’s enemies are now using all global means at their disposal to undermine the Jewish State.

In a few days, Israel will mark Holocaust Commemoration Day. There is no better time to support the historical battle just initiated by the Hebrew University-Hadassah Centre for Violence and Genocide Prevention and backed by former US ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton and Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz.

The campaign takes aim at Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Islamic religious leaders and the media for “inciting to commit genocide” and fomenting lethal anti-Jewishness reminiscent of the 1930s. The Jews are demonized using accusations of conspiracy and thirst for blood or power.

Logo Attorneys General Battle NLRB Over Boeing Plant

by Wes Barrett:

Nine state attorneys general sounded off in a letter to the National Labor Relations Board, calling a complaint it filed against Boeing for opening a production facility in South Carolina an assault on their states’ economies.

[...]

Some have called the NLRB action unprecedented, and South Carolina officials have expressed anger and fear that it could stymie growth. Attorneys general from Virginia, Nebraska, Texas, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Arizona and Oklahoma joined South Carolina attorney general Alan Wilson in signing Thursday’s letter to voice their concerns that NLRB interference could hinder economic growth in their states too.

“Our states are struggling to emerge from one of the worst economic collapses since the Depression. Your complaint further impairs an economic recovery,” the letter says. “Intrusion by the federal bureaucracy on behalf of unions will not create a single new job or put one unemployed person back to work.”

What would Machiavelli do?

By: Michael Barone:

For a really devastating critique of Barack Obama check out Walter Russell Mead’s American Interest blogpost “Falling Between Two Stools.” It’s particularly devastating, since Mead is not part of any right-wing attack machine—he voted (I believe) for Obama and he sympathizes with many (but not all) of his policies—and in much of his writing he has shown a sympathetic understanding of those on many points of the political spectrum. Here his harshest criticism is directed not at Obama’s policy goals but at the way he does business. Key paragraph:

“Here is the paradox we face: The President is a consensus-seeker whose decision making style rewards polarization and a conciliator who loses friends without winning over enemies.”

Israel is only place in Middle East where Arabs are entitled to full democratic rights

YNET:

The extreme events we witnessed in recent weeks are contrary to all democratic and enlightenment principles. But they are the expected response from regimes that have already long demonstrated their total disregard for human rights and international values. Exactly as happened after Hamas took control of the Gaza strip in June 2007, these regimes have shown the inevitable outcome that results when non- and anti-democratic forces are given free rein over their populations.

Perhaps ironically, the only place in the Middle East where Arabs enjoy full democratic rights is the State of Israel. Arab citizens of Israel take for granted their freedom of movement, freedom of speech, the right to elect and be elected, freedom of assembly and protest – in short, all the individual and collective rights that are the essential and unassailable prerogatives of any citizen in any democratic state.

These rights don’t exist in any Arab state, but in Israel all of us, Jewish and Arab citizens alike, receive full civil rights. Everyone is equal in the eyes of Israeli law; all receive national insurance, education and national health care. Israel’s Arab citizens are also afforded affirmative action measures in educational institutions and government offices.

The massacre at Camp Ashraf

Melanie Phillips:

While we’re on the subject of the baffling incoherence of western attitudes towards the uprisings in the Islamic world, we must not overlook the massacre that took place earlier this month of members of the Iranian opposition group, the People’s Mojahedin Organisation of Iran (PMOI), at their base in Ashraf in Iraq.

Despite the fact that the PMOI are ‘protected persons’ under the 4th Geneva Convention, on April 8 they were the victims of an unprovoked attack which was apparently carried out on the orders of the Iraqi Prime Minister, Nuri al-Maliki. The unarmed civilian residents of Ashraf were fired at with machine-gun rounds, as a result of which 35 of them were killed and some 350 injured.

In this week’s edition: reports from Somalia, China and India

***********************************

1. Christian convert from Islam murdered in Somalia

(Source: Compass Direct)

A newly converted Christian from Islam was recently murdered by Muslim
militants in the Lower Shabele region of Somalia. On April 18, two
members of the al Shabaab Islamist group entered the house of
21-year-old Hassan Adawe Adan in Shalambod town and shot him dead.
Adan, single and living with his Muslim family, reportedly came to
Christ several months ago. Members of the secret Christian community
to which Adan belonged suspect someone informed the Islamic militants
of his conversion. One source said that a relative who belonged to the
al Shabaab Islamist group had told Adan’s mother that he suspected her
son was a Christian. The murder has heightened fear among other
converts living in the area.

Thank the Lord for the life and witness of Adan. Pray for comfort for
all those who mourn his passing. Pray Somali Christians will continue
to serve their Father faithfully and praise Him for the living hope of
His Son’s resurrection (1 Peter 1:3).

2. Two pastors detained by authorities in China

(Source: ChinaAid Association)

Police apprehended two house church pastors, Pastor Liu Fenggang and
Pastor Zhang Mingxuan, on their way to visit churches for Easter on
April 23. The pastors were driving from Beijing to Chengde, Hebei
province, when local police stopped their vehicle at a highway exit.
Both were taken to a police station and held for more than four hours.
Pastor Liu was ordered to drive the car back to Beijing, under escort
of authorities. Authorities drove Pastor Zhang and his wife to a local
hotel, where they were still detained at last report. Pastor Zhang –
known to many as Pastor “Bike” for riding his bike across the country
to encourage house church members — has been arrested, detained and
interrogated for his ministry several times in recent years (see

http://www.persecution.net/cn-2010-09-23.htm

).

Pray for peace for these detained believers. Pray authorities will
repent of their unjust treatment of them. Pray Christians in China
will work in unity and set their minds on Christ as they serve the
Lord amid opposition (1 Corinthians 1:10). Pray religious freedom will
be truly recognized throughout China.

3. Christian leader attacked by militants in India

(Source: Compass Direct)

Hindu militants recently beat Ramesh Devda, 30, a pastor and
evangelist, in Madhya Pradesh state, India. On April 4, Pastor Ramesh
was travelling by motorbike with his two sons from Chikklia to Raseda
when three militants on motorbikes suddenly blocked his way. The
militants, drunk and armed with large bamboo sticks and clubs, beat
the pastor in front of 10-year-old Elias and 8-year-old Shimon. They
threatened to kill Pastor Ramesh and warned him not to come to the
area again. They delivered brutal blows all over his body, including
his head. The terrified cries of the young boys alerted people passing
by to the situation. When others arrived on scene, the attackers fled.
At last report, Pastor Ramesh was in the hospital receiving care for
severe injuries, including a fractured skull. He was thankful that his
sons were spared from beating, though his older son sustained a leg
injury during the attack.

Pastor Ramesh, who serves with the Christian Reformed Fellowship of
India in three villages, suspects his attackers were Hindu militants
angered by his Sunday worship services. Although he believes the
attack was pre-planned, he does not want to report it to the police,
as he fears retaliation.

Ask God to heal Pastor Ramesh. Pray a spirit of trust in the Lord will
guard his heart and mind against fear. Pray for guidance and safety
for his wife and children, who are also active in Christian ministry.
Pray Christians in India will look to the God of truth as their
righteous refuge and tower of strength (Psalm 31:1-5). You can post a
prayer for Pastor Ramesh and his family on our Persecuted Church
Prayer Wall at http://www.persecution.net/prayerwall

4. Five Christian leaders arrested in Inner Mongolia, China

(Source: VOM-USA)

Five Christian leaders were recently arrested in Inner Mongolia,
China. One of the leaders, a pastor named Jesse, was reportedly
arrested for the “offense” of having 1,000 university students attend
his church. Approximately 100 of the university students are also
Bible school students who are taught by a VOM worker. Police have
detained Pastor Jesse five times over the last year, and they had
warned him that he was being kept under close watch. At last report,
he and the four others were being held in a detention center where
prisoners are usually kept for at least 30 days. It’s not known
whether he will be formally sentenced. A friend of Jesse’s has said,
“We sent some clothes but were not able to meet and talk to
him. Please pray. The situation here is so bad.”

Pray Pastor Jesse and the other leaders will be released. Ask the Lord
to encourage them as they suffer for serving Him. Pray the believers
under their leadership will not grow weaker in faith, but that they
will be emboldened and strengthened by the Holy Spirit. Pray the
Gospel message will continue to go forward in China, despite
opposition.

5. Update: Members of the Shouwang Church arrested again in China

(Source: ChinaAid Association)

Police placed at least 500 members of the Shouwang Church, in Beijing,
China, under house arrest in an attempt to prevent them from holding
an outdoor Easter worship service on April 24. The arrests did not
stop other members from showing up at the designated worship site,
however. Several went to the site, a plaza, where they were met by
police and police vehicles and then herded onto a bus. Other church
members were able to assemble in small groups in nearby restaurants,
where they proceeded to hold their worship service. Police reportedly
detained 34 of the believers. Twenty-four were known to be held in
various local police stations, eight were in transit, and at least two
were unaccounted for at last report. This is the second time in less
than a month that the Shouwang Church, which has approximately 1,000
members, has been targeted by authorities, as they were also prevented
from worshipping and detained in mid-April (see

http://www.persecution.net/cn-2011-04-14.htm

).

Pray for strength and a continued assurance of God’s presence for
members of the Shouwang Church. Pray those arrested will be released.
Pray Chinese Christians will be equipped with everything they need, so
that they may do work which is pleasing to the Lord Jesus.

faith at great cost at http://www.persecution.net/china.htm
