Judge John Roll Was a Hero: Why Didn’t We Know This?

Sandy Rios:

Could it be the heroes of this story have been chosen and that Judge Roll doesn’t fit the template? Appointed by President George H.W. Bush, could it be that Judge Roll’s act of courage was seen to diminish or interfere with the aggrandizement of a Democratic Congresswoman from her tragic shooting? Could it be that in an attempt to trade on her tragic circumstances, the report of a heroic Republican Judge would be inconvenient?

State Dept. v. Mom & Pop

By MICHAEL A. WALSH:

Lost in the wake of the horrific shootings in Tuc son was a modest battle in the culture war: The State Department quietly decreed that some passport applications would henceforth be gender neutral. No more “mother” and “father”; such terms were apparently too retro, too judgmental for the Foggy Bottom bonzes. Instead, Parent One and Parent Two would do just fine.

O Brave New World, that has such bureaucrats in it.

A backlash quickly ensued, so Secretary of State Hillary Clinton backed away (some), ordering that the terms “mother” and “father” could peacefully coexist with the new “parent” designations on the forms used by American citizens abroad to obtain passports for new babies. But the camel’s nose is now under the tent.

Worshiping Moloch

By William J. Murray:

Moloch was one of many pagan gods worshiped by means of human sacrifice. Pagans who worshiped Moloch often sacrificed one of their own children, who was ritually murdered and then placed in a sacrificial altar of fire. The sacrifice of the child was to assure a blessing of prosperity for the family. Some followed the Canaanite practice of placing under the front doorstep of the family home the bones that remained after the burning of the child.

In short, a child was murdered for the promised convenience and prosperity the family was to receive from Moloch. This sounds barbaric to those of us living in the 21st century. It seems barbaric until it is realized that since the Roe v. Wade decision, nearly 50 million babies have been murdered legally in the United States for the convenience or prosperity of their mothers and other family members. Abortion has the same intended outcome of personal and family prosperity as did the sacrifice of a child at the altar of Moloch.

Cohen’s Tirade of Hate

by Rick Moran, FrontPage:

Little more than a week after President Barack Obama entreated the country to make a new commitment to civility in discourse, the president’s party has returned to its vitriolic ways. In a statement that has generated stern disapproval from the Jewish community, and utter silence from the Left, Representative Steve Cohen (D-TN) stood in the well of the House of Representatives early Wednesday morning and compared his opponents to Nazis and their cause to the Holocaust. One can’t help from wondering: Is this what our president had in mind when he said that we should make sure “that we are talking with each other in a way that heals, not in a way that wounds”?

Blogs for Choice?

Abortion means killing a baby. That is why Christians are against it. That is why I am against it. It is murder. Blogs for Choice would tell you the baby is merely a clump of cells with no sentience. How would they know? They don’t. But they want you to believe it. That way the slaughter can go on.

Don’t believe what logic refutes.

Here is a baby safe in its mother’s womb …

Safe that is, until the lie is accepted as truth.

Rush talks Obama’s missing birth certificate

by therightscoop:

Rush spent nearly his entire first segment talking about a story he’s been sitting on all week. He say she wanted to see what happened to it before he weighed in on it. I’ve gotten emails on it myself but I’ve pretty much ignored it. The story is the case of Obama’s missing birth certificate.

The new Hawaii Governor, who vowed to end this birth certificate conspiracy, now claims that he can’t find it in the archives. There’s only a notation that it exists, but no actual birth certificate. Rush says that something is certainly not right about this story, but he believes that it may just be more trickery to get the birthers all worked up.

In the segment following this one (which is not included in the video), he made the point that they have someone on record in 2008 vouching for Obama, saying that they actually saw it. And now the Hawaii Governor can’t find it? He warns of deception and trickery here.

Obama Admin Lobbying Honduras To Allow Zelaya Back In? Are You Kidding?

by Alberto de la Cruz:

On the last day of December last year, Manuel “Mel” Zelaya, the deposed Honduran president and self-described victim of high-frequency radiation attacks by Israeli mercenaries, vowed to the press that he would return to Honduras. Few outside of Honduras have paid much attention to Zelaya’s MacArthur-esque prediction, but it has become apparent there is more behind his declaration than his usual hyperbole and bombastic absurdities.

Behind the scenes in the Obama administration there appears to be a concerted effort to pressure the democratically elected government of President Porfirio Lobo to dismiss charges of misappropriation of government funds and falsifying documents that are pending against Zelaya. This would open the door for his return to the country, and would be certain to undermine the delicate process of reestablishing democracy and order that is currently taking place in this poor and beleaguered nation.

[...]

Why do you think they hung Mao ornaments on the White House Christmas tree? They’re communists, that’s why … and so is Zelaya.  And why do you think they stiffed Netanyahu at the White House?  Because communists are anti-semites … like Zelaya appears to be and which his whacko ‘Israeli mercenaries’ paranoia suggests.

Human Rights Rogues Are UN-fit to Serve

By Hillel Neuer:

Why does the United Nations’ Human Rights Council turn a blind eye to systematic repression in countries such as Cuba, Iran and Zimbabwe? Here’s one reason: Its Advisory Committee, meeting this week in Geneva, is dominated by apologists for the world’s worst dictators.

The Obama administration is rightly calling to abolish this body of 18 advisers. It’s time for other UN stakeholders to do the same.

British Pol Echoes CAIR Talking Point About Islamists

Jonathan S. Tobin:

Those wondering just how far gone Britain is on the question of the influence of Islamism got another shock this week when Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, the co-chair of the Conservative Party and a minister without portfolio in Prime Minister David Cameron’s cabinet, asserted that Islamophobia has gone mainstream there. But rather than merely issuing a call for more tolerance, Warsi’s speech last night at the University of Leicester sought to cast aspersions not only on those who espouse religious prejudice but also on those who have differentiated between moderate peaceful Muslims and radical Islamists.

The speech, which has caused quite a stir in the United Kingdom, contains this curious formulation: “The notion that all followers of Islam can be described either as ‘moderate’ or ‘extremist’ can fuel misunderstanding and intolerance.” She goes on to complain that the designation of some Muslims as moderate is inherently invidious.

The admirable Melanie Phillips analyzes Warsi’s illogical thesis this way:

Hamas and Fatah Take Their War to Hospitals

by Khaled Abu Toameh:

Palestinian patients in the Gaza Strip have become the latest victims of the ongoing power struggle between the two Palestinian governments of Fatah and Hamas.

Until recently, the two governments used to blame Israel for the shortage of various types of medicine in the Gaza Strip: spokesmen for the Hamas and Fatah governments claimed that the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip was depriving the ill of many badly-needed medicines.

This week, the two rival Palestinian governments held each other — not Israel — responsible for the health crisis in the Gaza Strip.

The Palestinian government in the West Bank, headed by Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, announced that Hamas had been stealing or hiding most of the medicine that was sent to the Gaza Strip. Many Palestinians are believed to have died because of the lack of drugs and medical equipment.

According to the Fayyad government, Hamas militiamen have been confiscating shipments of medical supplies donated by the international communities and later offering the medical supplies for sale.

Video: Whatever happened to the anti-war movement?

by Ed Morrissey:

Remember when opponents of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq used to hold massive rallies with lots of media attention, and newspapers like the New York Times warned that the 1960s may be returning? That turned out to be a short decade. Reason TV’s Ted Balaker and Zach Weissmueller look at the sudden dissipation of the anti-war movement, which in reality was a proxy fight in a much different battle:

Statement by Maureen Roll

Pueblo Politics:

Maureen Roll, the wife of U.S. District Judge John Roll, who was among six people killed in the shooting rampage on Jan. 8, issued a statement today, reflecting on the moments of compassion that have since given her comfort.

There are no words to describe how my world was shattered on Saturday morning, Jan. 8, 2011. Not only did I lose John Roll, my husband and best friend of more than 40 years, but our three sons lost a wonderful father and our grandchildren their beloved papa.

But something else happened that day and in the days that have followed.

My family’s spirit has been lifted by the outpouring of support and kindness from our community. That community begins with friends and neighbors, and expands to include the community of Tucson.

It does not end there. We are a community as a state and as a nation. When a tragedy like this takes place, we come together as a people – and this is exactly what occurred for my family after the events of Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011.

Venezuela Becomes New Stalinist Nation

By Sher Zieve:

In their game of “Who can create the Fastest Slave State”, Venezuelan Dictator (now official) Hugo Chavez is now ahead of US Dictator Barack Hussein Obama. Not long ago, Chavez made the comment “Hey, Obama has just nationalized nothing more and nothing less than General Motors. Comrade Obama! Fidel, careful or we are going to end up to his right.”

Slowly at first but recently more quickly, intensely and more violently every day, Hugo Chavez has become one of the current incarnations of Josef Stalin. Over strong objections from the opposition, in December, Chavez’ ruling and majority Socialist Party granted him full “decree” (dictatorial) powers. Chavez has now begun his iron-handed and iron-fisted rule over the people of Venezuela. By the way, Chavez affected this over Christmas. What other country’s Marxist Party does the same thing in shoving its totalitarianism down the throats of its own people? If you answered the US Marxist-used-to-be-Democrat-Party, you’re right!

Franklin Graham: The Spirit of Anti-Christ Is Everywhere

By Elena Garcia|Christian Post:

Franklin Graham told students at John Brown University on Tuesday to remain committed in their faith in Jesus Christ and preach the Gospel in spite of the persecution they may face.

Speaking during a special chapel service, the evangelical preacher asked the students of the private Christian university in Siloam Springs, Ark., to “set the sail for the course that God has in front of you,” while overcoming the pitfalls, temptations and challenges in their path.

“The last thing the devil wants you to do is serve the Lord Jesus Christ,” he said.

Graham, the president and CEO of Samaritan’s Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, shared about his ministry’s relief response in the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake, telling the audience that the Gospel message has always been at the core of their work.

He said that they prayed with every patient before an operation and gave a Bible to every patient.

“We wanted everyone to know that Jesus Christ was God’s Son,” said the American evangelist.

Graham recently traveled back to Haiti where he delivered the Gospel message to tens of thousands at the National Soccer Stadium in Port-au-Prince. Hundreds came forward when he extended an invitation to receive Christ.

China: The First Mature Fascist State

by Michael Ledeen:

For nearly ten years, I have been arguing that China may well be the first example of a mature fascism in power. The highest praise imaginable has been bestowed on this theory, by the People’s Republic itself. When I published an updated version of my theory (first published in the Wall Street Journal in 2002 and reprised in different form in NRO thereafter) in the Far East Economic Review in May, 2008, the entire issue was banned in China.

On the occasion of Mr. Hu’s visit to Washington, it seems appropriate to revisit this theme, which seems to me to have been abundantly confirmed by events.

Mud Libel

by Ann Coulter, FrontPage:

After it came out that the Tucson shooter, Jared Loughner, was a liberal pothead who hated Christianity, laughed about aborted babies, never listened to talk radio, hated George Bush and cited “Mein Kampf” as one of his favorite books to annoy his Jewish mother, liberals suspended blaming “political rhetoric” for about two days. Then they went right back to blaming conservatives for the shooting.

The media continue to avoid giving any details and simply announce that Loughner was “anti-government,” implying that he’s your standard George Will conservative who believes Congress has offended the principles of federalism by encroaching on the states’ authority under the Constitution.

In fact, Loughner’s “anti-government” beliefs consist of: burning the American flag on video; denouncing our currency with the exclamation, “No! I won’t trust in God!”; and wanting to kill cops.

His other big anti-government position is that he believes the government was behind 9/11 — just like well-known tea partiers Rosie O’Donnell, Obama’s “green jobs” czar Van Jones, Rehab habitue Charlie Sheen and left-wing historian Howard Zinn.

If we’re looking for a rationale other than “Loughner was nuts,” I think the more relevant facts about him are that he was an atheist who detested religion and religious people, made lots of references to satanic New Age “conscience dreaming” (sic) and was involved in the occult.

Europe’s Muslim Lobby

by Soeren Kern:

Europeans often fantasize about America’s so-called Jewish lobby, which they claim has a chokehold over American finance, media and politics and is responsible for all manner of conspiratorial evil. But few Europeans like to talk about the growing influence of Europe’s Muslim lobby, a conglomeration of hundreds of Muslim political and religious organizations — many of which are media-savvy mouthpieces for militant Islam that openly pursue anti-European, anti-Western and anti-Semitic agendas and often receive financial support from Islamic fundamentalist countries like Saudi Arabia.

Among the Israel-haters

Jonathan Kay:

Last night, I went to the University of Toronto’s George Ignatieff Theatre, plunked down my $5, and, along with about 130 other interested observers, walked into a 2-hour panel discussion called “Exposing Israeli Apartheid and the Violation of Palestinian Rights: A public forum on the second anniversary of the Gaza massacre.”

Speakers included Khaled Mouammar (head of the defunded and marginalized Canadian Arab Federation); gay activist Tim McCaskell; and Jenny Peto, who, by this point, really needs no introduction. The Toronto Star‘s Antonia Zerbisias was originally on the speaker’s list, but withdrew for mysterious reasons, and was replaced by an earnest U of T undergrad named Vivien Douglas from “Students Against Israeli Apartheid” (not to be confused with McCaskell’s group, “Queers Against Israeli Apartheid”; or Peto’s “Coalition Against Israeli Apartheid”).

As someone who’s familiar with both sides of the Israel-Palestine debate, I didn’t expect to hear any new arguments. But it is always interesting to see activists in their native habitat, as it were — preaching to their own.

Scientists fight bugs [C. Diff] with poo

Reuters:

Once a year, every year, Professor Thomas Borody receives a single-stem rose from one of his most grateful patients. She is, he says, thanking him for restoring her bowel flora.

It’s a distasteful cure for a problem that’s increasingly widespread: the Clostridium difficile bug, typically caught by patients in hospitals and nursing homes, can be hard to treat with antibiotics. But Borody is one of a group of scientists who believe the answer is a faecal transplant.

Some jokily call it a “transpoosion.” Others have more sciencey names like “bacteriotherapy” or “stool infusion therapy.” But the process involves, frankly, replacing a person’s poo with someone else’s, and in the process, giving them back the “good” bugs they desperately need.

Palinoia, the Destroyer

By JAMES TARANTO:

Why does their hatred of her burn so hot?

Ask them, and they’ll most likely tell you: Because she’s a moron. But that is obviously false. To be sure, her skills at extemporaneous speaking leave much to be desired. But that can be said of a good many politicians on both sides of the aisle, including George W. Bush, John Kerry and, yes, Barack Obama. And don’t get us started on the man who defeated her for the vice presidency.

She drives them crazy.

Whether or not she is presidential timber–and we are inclined to think that she is not–there is no denying that she is a highly accomplished person. She is also a highly accomplished woman, what in an earlier age would have been called a feminist pioneer: the first female governor of the malest state in the country, the first woman on the presidential ticket of the party on the male side of the “gender gap.” Having left politics, whether temporarily or permanently, she has established herself as one of the most consequential voices in the political media.

They say she is uneducated. What they mean is that her education is not elite–not Harvard or Yale, or even Michigan or UCLA. They resent her because, in their view, she has risen above her station.

The Iraq war witch-hunt (ctd)

Melanie Phillips:

The media hanging jury has seized upon the latest evidence by the former UK Attorney-General Lord Goldsmith to the Iraq War Inquiry as the all-but final nail in Tony Blair’s coffin as the man who took the UK into an illegal war. Everyone has seized on the following exchange to prove the case beyond any doubt by showing that Blair ignored the Attorney’s advice that war would be illegal:

Do you consider that the Prime Minister’s words were compatible with the advice you had given him?

No…I was uncomfortable about them…my concern was that we should not box ourselves in by the public statements that were made, and create a situation which might then have to be unravelled.

But a careful reading of Lord Goldsmith’s admittedly tortuous reasoning reveals that this is a deeply misleading interpretation. For the statement above referred only to one particular legal point on which Blair ignored his advice. And this is how the questions and his answers subsequently went (my emphasis in bold):

Defending the English Defense League

by David Solway, FrontPage:

The EDL, or English Defense League, which vigorously opposes the advance of Islam into the cultural nexus of Western democracies, finds itself on the receiving end of the customary hysteria that greets every such attempt to defend a way of life we have too long taken for granted. Originating in the city of Luton in England, where a substantial, radicalized Muslim population has been linked to various terror plots and fomented demonstrations against British troops returning from Iraq, the EDL has taken its premonitory message to Europe and North America. A rally was held on January 11, 2011 in Toronto, hosted by the Jewish Defense League (JDL). Predictably, it was met by “pacifist” protesters, associated with several anti-Zionist and ostensibly anti-racist groups, chanting such peaceable slogans as “EDL—go to Hell” and “Smash, Smash, Smash EDL”—and, yes, initiating pockets of violence requiring police intervention. So it goes.

Although defamed as a “neo-fascist organization” responsible for targeting “all Muslim people simply for being who they are,” nothing could be further from the case.

5 synagogues vandalized in Montreal

Jerry Philipson:

Jews in Montreal and the rest of Canada weren’t the only victims of the religious fanatics who vandalized five synagogues and a Jewish school in Montreal in the early morning hours of January 17. Decent Canadians of all persuasions were victimized too because the vandalism was not only a direct frontal assault on Canadian values like tolerance and pluralism and religious freedom, it was also a warning to other religious groups as well. These acts are more than anti-Semitism carried out by simple minded local bigots. They are part of the religious war targeting Christians, Jews and religious minorities that is going on all over the world and have brought a level of planning and organization to Canada that hasn’t been seen before.

Tucson and the Kamikaze Left

By Richard Viguerie:

Following their shellacking in the first regularly scheduled federal election of the Tea Party era, the political left and the ruling-class media made predictable calls for civility in political discourse. I say predictable because, as a general rule, the left and their media partners make calls for bipartisanship and civility only when conservatives ascend to political power, and they direct it only at conservatives, not at the extremists on their side.

The recent tragedy in Tucson, however, displayed in condensed hours and days the visceral, disgraceful desperation of the left and ruling-class media.

Americans, through the Tea Party movement, are in a peaceful political war against the ruling class. To the everyday Americans-turned-political-activists, this is a war for the future of the America we cherish. The ruling class understands this is a war against the self-dealing privilege and kleptocracy they’ve created over many decades.
