The Keynesian Dead End

WSJ:

Today’s G-20 meeting has been advertised as a showdown between the U.S. and Europe over more spending “stimulus,” and so it is. But the larger story is the end of the neo-Keynesian economic moment, and perhaps the start of a healthier policy turn.

For going on three years, the developed world’s economic policy has been dominated by the revival of the old idea that vast amounts of public spending could prevent deflation, cure a recession, and ignite a new era of government-led prosperity. It hasn’t turned out that way.
[1keynes]

Now the political and fiscal bills are coming due even as the U.S. and European economies are merely muddling along. The Europeans have had enough and want to swear off the sauce, while the Obama Administration wants to keep running a bar tab. So this would seem to be a good time to examine recent policy history and assess the results.

Save the Turtles. Kill the unborn.

Jeannie DeAngelis:

The thought is unbearable to imagine. Sea turtles coated with oil struggling for the shore ensnared between two boats, lit on fire, and cremated alive.

Yet one can’t help but notice the similarity that scorched Gulf sea turtles have to babies aborted within the womb. The only difference is that incinerated turtles can be seen with the naked eye while the preborn are hidden from view.

Las Vegas Hotel Owner tells it like it is

James Simpson:

This is better than Rick Santelli’s rant. Here is a successful businessman giving us the reality of the situation.

Hotel owner Steve Wynn describes this administration and Congress’s policies. As he says repeatedly, it is a combination of the insane spending and regulatory policies of the Democrats and the complete uncertainty this creates for business.

As I have said, this is a deliberate strategy. Nothing discourages business more than uncertainty, and the Obama administration has introduced a climate of uncertainty in this country that is unprecedented in our history. Even during war, no American ever seriously believed anyone would come along and attempt to change the fundamental structure of our society. But it is happening now before our eyes!

Hillary: Let the babies starve until we fund abortions

by Ed Morrissey:

Anne Halpine and Greg Pfundstein ask why the Obama administration wants to derail efforts by the G-8 to send aid to improve maternal and infant health in the poorest nations of the world. The G-8 met this week to discuss a wide variety of topics, mainly focusing on economic growth but also foreign aid. In their National Review column, Halpine and Pfundstein report that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton wants that aid held hostage in order to push an abortion agenda:

The Oral Suicide Club: David Weigel Joins Helen Thomas, Van Jones, Michael Richards, Howard Dean

Posted by Gregg Opelka:

It’s like a doctor who smokes. You’d think the last person to be done in by his own words would be a journalist. Shouldn’t a purveyor of words know better?

Yet as today’s forced resignation by WaPo columnist David Weigel proves, “Physician, heal thyself” is one piece of advice that seems to be ignored by wordsmiths of just about all stripes these days. On the heels of Helen Thomas—or are they flats?—Weigel is just the latest to join the Oral Suicide Club.

Shocking! Bat-wielding Union Thugs Attack Non-union Workers

by LaborUnionReport:

Union violence is often talked about anecdotally but seldom addressed. Even though one 25-year study found nearly 9,000 reported incidents of union violence, union-controlled Democrats often try to sweep it under the rug and, when they can’t, they’ll feign shock while seeming to relish it when it happens.

On Wednesday, in Upper Merion, PA (outside of Philadelphia) another act of union brutality took place when several (presumably) union thugs used baseball bats to beat some construction workers who, in the union’s eyes, were guilty of being non-union.

Crippled by conspiracies

By Leonard Stern, The Ottawa Citizen:

The tradition of conspiracy-thinking in the Muslim world is entrenched and quite fascinating. My first exposure to it was back in journalism school at Carleton University. It was 1993, and I was part of a student television crew sent to cover, as a class assignment, an anti-Israel protest outside the Ottawa Congress Centre, where then-Israeli foreign minister Shimon Peres was speaking.

As we walked into the crowd lugging our TV equipment, an Arab demonstrator pointed to our camera and screamed “Mossad!” Other demonstrators, wearing Yasser Arafat-style kafiyas, became very agitated and started jostling us, yelling “Mossad! Mossad!” We showed our university student IDs. The mob grew angrier, convinced the cards were fake.

Now it’s true that all cultures have conspiracy industries. Here in the industrialized West, there are people who believe in alien abduction, that pharmaceutical companies orchestrated the H1N1 vaccination campaign, and that Bobby Kennedy killed Marilyn Monroe.

In the West, however, this stuff is relegated to the fringe. Conversely, the culture of conspiracy in the Arab and Muslim world is mainstream, promoted in mass-circulation media and by influential intellectual, religious and political leaders.

No more banqueting on Black

By Steven Skurka

Unlike a soccer match, there are no draws in a legal battle. The law resolves cases with clearly defined winners and losers. This settled feature of the adversarial system was challenged with the release of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in the appeal of Conrad Black.

According to Miguel Estrada, Black’s Supreme Court counsel, the ruling marked a great victory and a path toward his client’s freedom. Eric Sussman, the former lead prosecutor at Black’s trial, suggested that the decision marked a bad news day for Black and appeared optimistic that the Court of Appeals would not tamper with Black’s three mail fraud convictions.
Is it time for Conrad Black to celebrate or is he facing four more years of incarceration?

[...]

Black is guilty of nothing more than being conservative, making Hollinger shareholders rich and daring to maintain his innocence in the face of av political show trial in that bastion of political neutrality … Chicago!  God speed Mr. Black and may your vindication be complete and your persecutors be made to publicly apologise.

Islamic Republic of Iran’s Smoke and Mirrors

By Arash Irandoost:

Since 1977, no two men have contributed more to the erosion of America’s credibility and prestige than President Carter and his foreign policy advisor, Dr. Zbigniew Brzezinski (with the verdict not yet in on President Obama). Jimmy Carter, aided by Mr. Brzezinski, introduced new directions in foreign policy that would ultimately trick Russia to invade Afghanistan in a cold blooded eagerness to payback Moscow for Vietnam and betray one of America’s closest allies in the Middle East. By orchestrating the Shah’s failure and supporting Khomeini, they created one of the most militant anti-American dictatorships, considered by many as the most dangerous threat faced by the United States today.

Video: Palin speaks at CSU Stanislaus

by Ed Morrissey:

Sarah Palin finally gave her speech California State University at Stanislaus after a controversy over its contract with the conservative firebrand. Palin started off by joking about the kerfuffle, demanding a bendable straw and a bottle of water at the beginning of the speech. Instead of the usual cheering crowd, CSU Stanislaus provided a polite and appreciative audience, and Palin delivered a speech that fit the venue. She drew connections between the agricultural industry in the area and her family’s work in commercial fishing before launching into a more philosophical review of the nature of liberty. Inside the Black Panther case Anger, ignorance and lies

THIS IS A MUST READ:

By J. Christian Adams, The Washington Times:

On the day President Obama was elected, armed men wearing the black berets and jackboots of the New Black Panther Party were stationed at the entrance to a polling place in Philadelphia. They brandished a weapon and intimidated voters and poll watchers. After the election, the Justice Department brought a voter-intimidation case against the New Black Panther Party and those armed thugs. I and other Justice attorneys diligently pursued the case and obtained an entry of default after the defendants ignored the charges. Before a final judgment could be entered in May 2009, our superiors ordered us to dismiss the case.

The New Black Panther case was the simplest and most obvious violation of federal law I saw in my Justice Department career. Because of the corrupt nature of the dismissal, statements falsely characterizing the case and, most of all, indefensible orders for the career attorneys not to comply with lawful subpoenas investigating the dismissal, this month I resigned my position as a Department of Justice (DOJ) attorney.

U.S. Chamber Official: Disclose Act ‘Shreds’ Constitution

NEWSMAX:

The Disclose Act that House Democrats passed Thursday would “shred” the U.S. Constitution and represents a “blatant partisan maneuver to protect their incumbency,” according to U.S. Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice President R. Bruce Josten.

In an exclusive interview with Newsmax.TV, Josten says the Disclose Act, which passed by a 219 to 206 margin, reveals just how much Democrats fear the nation’s rising anti-incumbent fervor.

“I think it’s clear what’s going on here,” says Josten. “The House Democratic majority and the Senate Democratic majority in Congress are clearly trying to tilt the playing field in the middle of the game, racing and rushing to do it.”

Is the Obama WH evading disclosure laws?

by Ed Morrissey:

The New York Times buries the lede in its story about how the White House has avoided getting publicly linked to lobbyists after making them an issue during the presidential campaign of 2008. Eric Lichtblau takes a break from exposing national-security secrets to expose the practice of making the local Caribou Coffee an extension of the White House in order to meet with lobbyists in an environment without those pesky Secret Service logs, which is bad enough for an administration that keeps dislocating its shoulder from constantly patting itself on the back on transparency. However, the real story may be that the White House is breaking laws intended on keeping records of all official business in the executive branch:

Obama selects Muslim expert in Islamic transactions as fellow

By Chelsea Schilling, WorldNetDaily:

The Obama administration has announced its appointment of 13 White House fellows – and the first person featured on its short list is a Muslim attorney who specializes in Shariah-compliant transactions.

“This year’s White House fellows are comprised of some of the best and brightest leaders in our country,” Michelle Obama said in the June 22 announcement. “I applaud their unyielding commitment to public service and dedication to serving their community.”

White House fellows spend a year as full-time, paid assistants to senior White House staff, the vice president, Cabinet secretaries and senior administration officials.

Samar Ali of Waverly, Tenn., is the first name appearing on the White House list. She is an associate with the law firm Hogan Lovells – a firm that claims to have advised on more than 200 Islamic finance transactions with an aggregate deal value in excess of $40 billion.

What does Islam plan for America? Read “Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld That’s Conspiring to Islamize America” and find out!

According to Ali’s biography posted on the White House website, “She is responsible for counseling clients on mergers & acquisitions, cross-border transactions, Shari’a compliant transactions, project finance, and international business matters. During her time with Hogan Lovells, she has been a founding member of the firm’s Abu Dhabi office.”

Hogan Lovells lists Ali’s experience “advising a Middle Eastern university in the potential establishment of a Foreign Aid Conventional and Shari’ah Compliant Student Loan Program and advising a Middle Eastern client in relation to a U.S. government subcontract matter.”

“Our team members are at the forefront of developments in the Islamic finance industry,” Hogan Lovells boasts.

New Global Warming Scandal: ‘Consensus’ on Sun is One Expert

A staggering new finding seems to mire the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in global warming scandal every bit as devastating as Climategate.

The news broke June 24, 2010 on a Czech climate skeptic blog, Klimaskeptik.cz, that calls the latest global warming scandal, “Judithgate.”

Roughly translated into English the site reveals that the The IPCC relied on evidence supplied by just only one Solar Physicist, Judith Lean, to create their “consensus that solar influence upon the climate was minimal.

Slicing and Dicing the Israeli Salami

by David Solway:

Writing in the Jerusalem Post on June 19, columnist Sarah Honig deconstructs the Arab and Palestinian design for defeating Israel via a policy of “salami-slicing.” Unable to destroy Israel in one fell swoop, Honing writes:

[T]hey settled on slicing Israel’s salami bit by bit to deprive it of strategic depth, render it more vulnerable to predations and erode it by demonization and demoralization.

Every concession that Israel makes to its Palestinian pseudo-negotiating counterpart, without the slightest reciprocation, is just another slice of territory, another fragment of legitimacy, lost to its enemies. Honig points out that the term was coined by Hungary’s communist dictator Mátyás Rákosi, who in the 1940s pursued the policy of szalámitaktika — salami tactics — to gradually dismember the opposition parties.

The salami tactic has a long history in the Middle East and was employed with consummate effect by terrorist kingpin and Fatah leader Yasser Arafat, in particular by manipulating the Oslo Accords to his advantage.

By JPOST.COM:

Miki Goldwasser, mother of fallen IDF soldier Ehud Goldwasser who was kidnapped and killed in Hizbullah raid four years ago, spoke out at march in support of freeing Gilad Schalit in the city of Nahariya on Friday.

“Gilad was kidnapped because of the Israeli government’s failures. He has yet to return home because of the continued failures of the Israeli government. You pay for your failures, sometimes dearly. If the State of Israel has not created deterrence until now, it will have to pay a negligibly high price in order to return a soldier to his family,” Goldwasser said.

Over 600 people participated in the march in Nahariya.

The four stages of Israeli policy: crisis, pressure, cave-in and agreement

By Aluf Benn, HAARETZ:

When the security cabinet decided to ease the civilian blockade on the Gaza Strip this week, the process followed the precise modus operandi Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has taken with regard to leading Israel’s foreign and defense policy this term. Each such incident has had four stages: crisis, pressure, cave-in and agreement.

[...]

But Netanyahu’s conduct in the flotilla and blockade episode, as in earlier crises, suggest he will have trouble rejecting an American policy initiative, if and when one is put forward. He will protest, but if Obama holds firm, the premier will once again cave in and the coalition will fall into line behind him. This will particularly be the case if Israel needs a U.S. life preserver in a confrontation with Iran and its supporters, as happened after the Yom Kippur War, the first Gulf War and the second intifada – events that derailed Israel’s self-confidence and led to territorial withdrawals. Netanyahu is a hero against the left-wing scarecrow in Israeli academe. In the face of Obama his roar turns into a whimper. He makes speeches about our historical rights and then does what the Americans dictate.

Sad but true.

“Junk DNA” Takes Yet More Heavy Blows

A paper has just been published in Nature which uncovers a host of new coding-independent functions for pseudogene mRNAs, including a role in tumor regulation. More exciting is that Poliseno et al. describe an entirely new regulatory function of RNA. This stands in contrast to conventional wisdom which maintains that the only function of mRNAs is encoding for proteins.

Obama and the War Against the Jews

by David Horowitz and Jacob Laksin, FrontPage:

In a letter to President Obama this week, 87 Senators urged the president to support Israel’s right to self-defense against the threats of terrorism from Hamas and Hezbollah and a nuclear-bound Iran that has repeatedly pledged to wipe Israel off the map. In another time, such counsel would be redundant. For most of Israel’s 60-year existence, the Jewish state has been able to count on the stalwart support of its American ally against the many enemies arrayed against it. As Arab states launched wars with exterminationist intent, and as the international community undermined Israel through the agency of the United Nations, America alone stood in Israel’s corner.

There is a place where the State of Israel is incessantly vilified, its leaders maligned, and its policies continuously criticized by Arabs and their third world and Western cohorts. Any attempt to defend Israel is immediately quashed by hordes of Jihadists and like-minded anti-Semites. Israel’s defenders are subjected to censorship while its most virulent detractors are afforded the podium to blather about this or that “atrocity” committed by Israel in defense of its citizenry. It’s a place where truth gives way to vitriolic, blood curdling Israel bashing.

Left-Wing Academia Crusader Doesn’t See Anything Wrong with NAS Book Bias Study

by Nichole Hungerford:

And why would he?

A few weeks ago, I wrote on an alarming study from the National Association of Scholars which demonstrated the complete hegemony of the left-wing perspective in university summer reading lists. A staggering 70% were found to be left-leaning and a mere 2% (!) represented the conservative perspective at all.

Ashley Thorne, communications director for the NAS, appeared on Fox News yesterday to discuss the controversy. Thorne has made it clear that the study was not intended to expose the political underbelly of our universities. It just sort of happened that way — and for obvious reasons.

Academia suffers from a glut of left-wing and far-left thought, and many of its purveyors are not the least bit reluctant to impart their perspective as unexamined truth to impressionable students.

The Law? How Quaint!

Victor Davis Hanson:

We are well into revolutionary times, but perhaps not in the way we traditionally think of political upheaval. Instead, insidiously, the law itself is becoming negotiable — or rather, it is becoming subservient to what elite overseers at any given time determine is a higher calling of social change.

Of course, progressive federal judges have been creating, rather than interpreting, law for decades. Yet seldom in memory have we seen such a systematic attack on our framework of laws as the present assault from the executive branch.

Federal immigration statutes mandate a clearly defined American border, which aliens may not cross without authorization. Yet the Obama administration not only does not fully enforce those statutes (in this regard, it is not behaving much differently from the prior administration), but also is preparing to sue the state of Arizona for implementing enforcement that follows the intent of neglected federal laws on the books. Apparently, the president believes that enforcement of existing law is a bargaining chip that can be used to obtain “comprehensive immigration reform” — a euphemism for blanket amnesty.

The Western way of war

By CAROLINE GLICK:

US General Stanley McChrystal has paid a huge price for his decision to give Rolling Stone reporter Michael Hastings free access to himself and his staff. But he performed a great service for the rest of us. US President Barack Obama fired McChrystal – his hand-picked choice to command NATO forces in Afghanistan – for the things that he and his aides told Hastings about the problematic nature of the US-led war effort in Afghanistan. But by acting as he did, McChrystal forced the rest of us to contend with the unpleasant truth not only about the US-led campaign against the Taliban in Afghanistan. He told us the unpleasant truth about the problematic nature of the Western way of war at the outset of the 21st century.

Barack Obama is refusing to listen to reason on economic policy

By Jeremy Warner, Telegraph [UK]:

Rarely has the dismal science of economics inflamed such passions. Over the past week, the “austerity versus growth” debate has exploded into open international hostilities.

A compromised form of words will already have been agreed for the communiqué to follow this weekend’s meeting of G8 and G20 leaders; the sherpas who do the preparatory donkey work for these stage-managed events will have ensured it.

But behind the anodyne platitudes of any statement, the tensions have reached fever pitch. Gone is the co-operative consensus that, in adversity 18 months ago, brought G20 nations together to fight the downturn.

The Leftist ‘Purification’ Movement

By Andrew Thomas:

To the contemporary conservative, progressive ideology is often murky and incomprehensible. It is very difficult for some on the right to understand the apparently illogical and unrealistic machinations of the radical leftist mindset. Their political objectives, if achieved, inevitably lead to further demands for concessions toward an ever-greater ideological purity.

Something even darker and more malevolent is happening, however. The various radical leftist factions and special interest groups are rapidly coalescing into a global movement.

A comprehensive and enlightening treatise on this topic was recently published in Orbis, the Foreign Policy Research Institute’s journal of world affairs, written by University of Buffalo professor Ernest Sternberg. The article is titled, “Purifying the World: What the New Radical Ideology Stands For”. It will open your eyes and scare you to death.

In Steinberg’s analysis, from the historical ashes of failed fascist and communist regimes a new totalitarian ideology is emerging:

Democrats: Free speech for me, not for thee

Washington Examiner:

The bill is full of draconian restrictions on individual political speech expressed via corporations, but gives privileged status to the Democrats’ union masters. A provision pushed by Pennsylvania Democrat Rep. Bob Brady, for example, allows unions to transfer unlimited funds among affiliated groups to pay for political ads with no disclosure whatever. That makes campaign funding more transparent?

Then there’s the ban on advocacy for or against a candidate by any company that received Troubled Asset Relief Program funds. That silences General Motors’ white-collar workers, but not the United Auto Workers union, which, oh by the way, got, among other things, $6.5 billion in preferred GM stock, paying a government-guaranteed 9 percent cash dividend. Could the fact the UAW gave more than $2 million to Democrats in 2008 explain why Democratic leaders pushed a proposal that so blatantly favors the union?

Similarly, DISCLOSE curbs political speech for employees of companies receiving more than $7 million in government contracts. Public sector unions that spend millions of recycled tax dollars electing Democrats have no such restriction
