Senator Conrad’s insulting defense of trying KSM in New York

David Jeffers, AT:

Democrat Senator from North Dakota, Kent Conrad, while defending the Obama Administration’s decision to try al Qaeda terrorists in civilian courts, said:

“If people don’t believe in our system, maybe they ought to go somewhere else.”

Really Senator Conrad? Would you like to retract that statement?

I am a Gold-Star Father, meaning my son Sergeant Eddie Jeffers was killed in Iraq. I am opposed to terrorists being tried in civilian courts. Did I mention that I am a 22 year Army veteran? Is it okay with you if invoke my free speech rights?

Global Banks Gird for Potential Implosion

By: Arnaud de Borchgrave, NEWSMAX:

Reputable financial houses, as they are described online, are telling their clients how to prepare for potential “global collapse” over the next two years.

France’s Societe Generale is such a house that is now “mapping a strategy of defensive investments to avoid wealth destruction,” according to the London Daily Telegraph’s chief investigative reporter, Ambrose Evans-Pritchard.

A 68-page report, headed by the bank’s asset chief, Daniel Fernon, explores forthcoming dangers but does not forecast which of three possible outcomes of the ongoing crisis it sees coming.

Candid Camera Moments

Victor Davis Hanson:

There are a number of isolated incidents that, in the great scheme of things, should be seen as rather trivial. But they are gaining symbolic importance, which is working against President Obama.

While the president is sermonizing on global warming in connection with his Asian tour and the visit of India’s head of state, we get the release of hacked emails from the British climate research center that seem to make a mockery of the entire climate-change debate — reducing it to the nasty level of academic infighting, fraud, and con games that we have become accustomed to in the postmodern Western university. At a time when the president is asserting the need for radical changes in our lives, the “science” that he once insisted would be the cornerstone of his new administration, appears shaky at best, and at worst a sort of 19th-century phrenology.

Bowing should not matter either. Obama did not bow to the Queen of England, but rather sent her I-pod photos of himself; yet he did kowtow to a Saudi royal, a Japanese emperor, and now a Chinese head of state. Like it or not, the image conveyed is that an American president defers to non-Western royalty and grandees in a way that is supposed to suggest, in symbolic fashion, that America is just one of many countries, without much exceptional about it and without much of an affinity for the West.

The UN Kicks Out a Leading Critic

by Joseph Klein, FrontPage:

The United Nations security department briefly detained a leading UN critic, Anne Bayefsky earlier this month and then escorted her out of the building after stripping her of her accreditation pass. Ms. Bayefsky, who is affiliated with a UN-recognized non-governmental organization and is an accredited United Nations observer, also happens to be a human rights watchdog who for years has publicized the rank hypocrisy at the UN when it comes to dealing with Israel and its terrorist enemies.

Her offense was that she dared to approach a microphone outside of the General Assembly hall in the press area and denounce the one-sided Goldstone Report on Gaza that the General Assembly had just endorsed. In her two minute comments, she criticized the General Assembly for passing a resolution that “doesn’t mention the word Hamas.”

“This is a resolution that purports to be even-handed; it is anything but”, she said. That is a pointed statement but hardly an incendiary one.

Apparently, even two minutes of straight talk was too much for the UN Palestinian representative who complained to UN security.

Rosenberg: Depression, Not Recession

NEWSMAX:

Economist David Rosenberg isn’t worried about when the recession will end: He’s worried about when the depression will end.

That’s right, the “d” word, which nearly all economists have declined to attached to the current global malaise.

“We’re in a form of depression,” Rosenberg, chief economist and strategist at Gluskin Sheff + Associates Inc., a Toronto-based wealth management firm, told CNBC.

“Depressions. . . typically happen after a prolonged period of credit excess morphs into a collapse, and you get asset deflation. We had asset deflation, and we had a contraction in private-sector credit.”

The economy is in the midst of a post-bubble credit collapse, Rosenberg said.

Michael Moriarty On Obama, Palin, NBC, Beck and…Gutfeld?

by Alicia Colon, Big Hollywood:

Mr. Moriarty has always been one of my favorite actors and given that he is an Irish American, I thought he’d be the perfect lead off to a series of interviews with notable Americans of Irish ancestry. I was thrilled to be able to connect with Mr. Moriarty, who now lives in Canada, and he graciously agreed to this Q&A interview.

Alicia Colon (AC): If you were still with L&O would you have objected to the season opener trashing the Bush administration over torture? What is your opinion on Gitmo?

Michael Moriarty (MM): From your description of the L & O program which I DIDN’T see, it sounds typically classic NBC. A Variety magazine article years ago described NBC as the most obedient network to governmental demands. It is now embarrassingly sycophantic. I’m not a fan of either of the Bush Presidents … but this judicial assault upon Guantanamo in a time of war that is still going on is approaching treason. Leave the suspects in Gitmo until the Islamic extremists cease and desist. Welcoming them into our country is suicidal … but then so is the entire Progressive Program for a New World Order. …

[...]

AC: What is your assessment of the Obama administration?

MM: Beyond a disaster!! In light of what Obama swore to at the inauguration – “to uphold the Constitution of the United States” – it’s a grotesque charade, a lie, a black comedy of immensely ominous implications for individual freedom in the world.

Great Recession will weigh on Canada for years: Economist

By John Morrissy, Financial Post:

While the effects of the global financial crisis were more muted in Canada, Safarian worries that growth here will be constrained for several years by large amounts of excess manufacturing capacity and bloated unemployment rolls.

Compared with the 20-per-cent-plus unemployment rate of the Depression’s Dirty Thirties, today’s 8.6 per cent rate is marginal, Safarian said.

Nevertheless, he cautions, including those who have dropped out of the workforce could easily double the rate. “Once they come flooding back when jobs become available, the unemployment rate could stay at eight per cent for quite some time. It could be years.”

Growth will be further held back by the nation’s excess industrial capacity, another factor common to the Great Depression.

Jonah, further to earlier discussions about the degree of scandalousness re Warmergate and the CRU, I think “Hide the decline” is a pretty hard phrase to “interpret” in any benign way, and a pretty easy way for anyone to get up to speed with what what’s going on. It’s already a song, and a T-shirt.

Hiding evidence of global cooling

THE WASHINGTON TIMES:

[...]

We don’t condone e-mail theft by hackers, though these e-mails were covered by Britain’s Freedom of Information Act and should have been released. The content of these e-mails raises extremely serious questions that could end the academic careers of many prominent professors. Academics who have purposely hidden data, destroyed information and doctored their results have committed scientific fraud. We can only hope respected academic institutions such as Pennsylvania State University, the University of Arizona and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst conduct proper investigative inquiries.

Most important, however, these revelations of fudged science should have a cooling effect on global-warming hysteria and the panicked policies that are being pushed forward to address the unproven theory.

***********************************
In this week’s edition: reports from Somalia, Russia and Egypt, with
updates from China.
***********************************

1. Christian from Muslim background martyred in Somalia

The body of a 23-year-old Somali convert from Islam to Christianity,
Mumin Abdikarim Yusuf, was discovered on the morning of November 14 in
Mogadishu’s Yaqshid district. On October 28, members of al-Shabaab, an
Islamic militant group, apprehended Yusuf and searched his home for
Christian materials after a 15-year-old Muslim boy accused Yusuf of
trying to convert him to Christianity. In an attempt to extract
evidence against him and to gain information about other Somali
Christians, the militants knocked out all of Yusuf’s front teeth and
broke several of his fingers. They then shot him twice in the head and
discarded his body on an empty residential street. Since it is unknown
whether Yusuf disclosed any information during his torture, the
underground Christians who knew him have relocated for their safety.
Yusuf’s Muslim family members are also in danger as militants have
accused them of failing to report his conversion to Christianity.
(Source: Compass Direct)

Pray for all those mourning the death of this brother in the Lord.
Pray for safety for the relocated believers. Pray that Yusuf’s
faithful witness will be a testimony to his Muslim family members and
that they will turn to Jesus for their salvation. To post a prayer of
solidarity for those mourning the loss of Yusuf, visit our Persecuted
Church Prayer Wall at http://www.persecution.net/prayerwall.

2. Priest murdered in Russia

A Russian Orthodox priest, Father Daniil Sysoyev (34), was gunned
down by a masked man in his church in southern Moscow on November 20.
The assailant entered the
St. Thomas Church and asked for the priest. When Father Sysoyev
identified himself, he was shot several times. He died on the way to
the hospital. Local Christians and officials believe Father Sysoyev’s
murder was religiously motivated. He had regularly received death
threats in recent years for criticizing Islam and evangelizing among
Muslims. Father Sysoyev is survived by his wife and three children.

Thank the Lord for the life and witness of Father Sysoyev. Ask the
Lord to supply his loved ones with peace and grace as they mourn for
him. Pray that Christians in Russia will be encouraged by his faithful
example and continue to lovingly and boldly proclaim God’s Word
(Ephesians 6:18-20). You can post a prayer for Father Sysoyev’s family
on our Persecuted Church Prayer Wall at

3. Muslim mobs attack Coptic Christians in Egypt

Christian Copts in the Upper Egyptian town of Farshoot and the
surrounding villages have been targeted in recent days by Muslim mob
attacks. The violence began after a young Christian man, Guirgis
Baroumi, was accused on November 18 of sexually abusing a 12-year-old
Muslim girl. Local sources believe that Muslims have used the
accusation as a pretext to attack Christians. On November 21, nearly
3,000 Muslims gathered outside the police headquarters in Farshoot to
attempt to kidnap Baroumi while he was being transported to court.
Although security forces were deployed, they reportedly did not take
any action to stop the violence. A Coptic priest, Benjamin Noshi,
suffered a fractured skull in the attack. The mobs looted and
destroyed many businesses owned by Christians while believers hid in
their homes. Some families were driven out of their residences.
Eyewitnesses also reported that Muslims burned wooden crosses in the
street while shouting “Allah Akbar” (God is great). On November 23,
Muslim mobs destroyed more Christian-owned businesses in the nearby
villages of Abou Shousha and Al-Arky. (Source: Assyrian International
News Agency, Coptic American Friendship Association)

Pray for the believers who have lost property in these riots. Pray
that Christ will equip Egyptian Christians to follow His example and
remain faithful to Him (2 Corinthians 1:8-9). Pray that the truth of
the allegations against Baroumi will be revealed.

4. Update: Chinese house church leader released

Uyghur Chinese house church leader Wusiman Yiming was released on
November 18 from a labour camp in Xinjiang after serving two years of
criminal detention for “divulging state secrets” (see
http://www.persecution.net/cn-2008-04-16.htm). Authorities had called
for a 10-15 year prison sentence for Yiming but significantly reduced
the term following international attention. A source who spoke with
Yiming stated that he “looks fragile but has a very strong spirit.”
Yiming, who has been reunited with his wife and two young daughters,
expressed his heartfelt thanks to those who have provided care and
help to his family members during his imprisonment. (Sources:
ChinaAid, Compass Direct)

Praise Jesus for Wusiman Yiming’s release! Ask God to bless him as he
reconnects with his loved ones. Pray too for the release of Alimujiang
Yimiti, another Uyghur Christian who was accused in the same case as
Yiming and remains in prison.

5. Update: Crackdown continues against church in Shanghai, China

On November 15, nearly 700 church members from the Wanbang Missionary
Church in Shanghai met together for worship despite ongoing harassment
from Chinese authorities (for more information, see
http://www.persecution.net/cn-2009-11-18.htm). Before the service, 10
police officers attempted to prevent Senior Pastor Cui Quan from
attending the gathering by blocking the entrance to his home. They
also threatened the taxi driver responsible for driving Pastor Cui and
his wife to the service. Several church members received text messages
containing threats and claiming that the service had been cancelled.
Despite this opposition, the believers gathered for worship, though
plain-clothes officials filmed the entire service.

On the morning of the following Sunday, November 22, Wanbang
Missionary Church pastors Cui Longguo, Liu Quanqin, and Huang Yun were
summoned to the police station in Minhang District. The pastors were
interrogated on allegations of “engaging in illegal organization and
activities.” Pastor Liu’s fingers were reportedly injured and his
personal property was damaged. Officials detained the three along with
Senior Pastor Cui until the afternoon to prevent them from leading the
worship service. However, the detention of the leaders and threats
from authorities did not prevent over 500 dedicated church members
from assembling outdoors for their two scheduled services. (Source:
ChinaAid)

Pray that the pastors of this church will be strong and effective
leaders to their congregation. Thank the Lord for the enduring
faithfulness of these believers. Pray that they will be permitted to
worship freely.

The skeptics are vindicated

By David Warren, The Ottawa Citizen:

A computer hacker in England has done the world a service by making available a huge quantity of evidence for the way in which “human-induced global warming” claims have been advanced over the years.

By releasing into the Internet about a thousand internal e-mails from the servers of the Climate Research Unit in the University of East Anglia — in some respects the international clearing house for climate change “science” — he has (or they have) put observers in a position to see that claims of conspiracy and fraud were not unreasonable.

More generally, we have been given the materials with which to obtain an insight into how all modern science works when vast amounts of public funding is at stake and when the vested interests associated with various “progressive” causes require a particular scientific result.

There is little doubt that the e-mails were real. Even so warmist a true-believer as George Monbiot led his column in the Guardian yesterday with: “It’s no use pretending this isn’t a major blow. The e-mails extracted … could scarcely be more damaging. I am now convinced that they are genuine, and I’m dismayed and deeply shaken by them.”

Cooking the climate books

Lorne Gunter, National Post:

Last Friday it was revealed that someone as yet unknown had hacked into the computers of the Climate Research Unit (CRU) in Hadley, U.K. The CRU–or Hadley as it is often referred to — is the source of one of the four main temperature records used by the United Nations and environmentalists to claim that the Earth is on the verge of a global meltdown. It is also home to some of the most prominent climate researchers in the world.

Leaked e-mails cast doubt on global-warming strategy

By LORRIE GOLDSTEIN, TORONTO SUN:

While Al Gore was preaching to the faithful at $500 a pop in Toronto last night, the explosive news on climate change leading up to the huge UN meeting starting Dec. 7 in Copenhagen was happening elsewhere.

In what has been dubbed “Climategate,” but more accurately resembles the surreptitious release of the Pentagon papers on the Vietnam war, computer hackers last week broke into the files of one of the world’s leading climate monitoring agencies at the U.K.’s University of East Anglia.

They then aired over the Internet the self-described “dirty laundry” of many of the world’s leading mainstream climate scientists.

The thousands of e-mails and other documents going back over a decade have prompted calls in the U.K. and U.S. for public inquiries into the controversial material and the security breach that led to its release.

The revelations have led to a tsunami of analysis and commentary in the climate blogosphere, which is far ahead of the mainstream media on the story. That isn’t surprising given the documents call into question much of the current orthodoxy on global warming many media have inaccurately reported as undisputed fact for years.

One e-mail reveals leading British climatologist Phil Jones of UEA writing in November 1999 about using a “trick” to “hide the decline” in global temperatures.

Scientist Repeats Swine Flu Lab-Escape Claim in Published Study

Bloomberg:

Adrian Gibbs, the virologist who said in May that swine flu may have escaped from a laboratory, published his findings today, renewing discussion about the origins of the pandemic virus.

The new H1N1 strain, which was discovered in Mexico and the U.S. in April, may be the product of three strains from three continents that swapped genes in a lab or a vaccine-making plant, Gibbs, and fellow Australian scientists wrote in Virology Journal. The authors analyzed the genetic makeup of the virus and found its origin could be more simply explained by human involvement than a coincidence of nature.

Acorning the Climate Change Movement

By Mark J. Fitzgibbons, AT:

The climate change movement may have been caught in its first ACORN moment, with the publication of emails suggesting global warming data has been manipulated or suppressed.

The University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit (CRU) email system was hacked, and it appears fraud as a political strategy may not be limited to ACORN’s community organizing. As with ACORN, rest assured, it won’t be the political or big media establishments that capture the next big evidentiary breakthroughs in “Climategate.”

Global warmists apparently don’t find destroying evidence offensive to their “science.” Similarly, ACORN doesn’t seem fettered by ethics. Not even a week apart from the breaking news of Climategate, BigGovernment.com reported that the San Diego ACORN office was caught on film literally dumping documents even though it is facing investigation.

Climate Fraud and the Environmental Agenda

By J.R. Dunn, AT:

The debate on environmentalism — specifically as regards the environmental movement itself — has been marked by confusion since the beginning. Criticism of environmentalist thinking tends to confuse means with goals. Environmentalist reforms, however they are presented and whatever they may involve, are simply means of pushing forward the Green agenda. As for the goals inherent in that agenda… they are something else entirely.

We see this misapprehension at work today in the debate concerning renewable power sources. Critics continually object that renewables such as wind, solar, and hydroelectric power simply can’t provide enough energy to run a modern industrial society. While figures differ, all forms of renewable energy added together don’t break into the double digits of what is required to support an advanced economy like that of the U.S. The general consensus lies at around 3 to 5%. It currently stands at roughly two-thirds of 1% — yes, you read that right. Much time is spent pointing this out, as if the Greens don’t realize it. Of course they do — in fact, that’s the entire point.

CRU’s Source Code: Climategate Uncovered

By Marc Sheppard, AT:

As the evidence of climate fraud at the University of East Anglia’s prestigious Climactic Research Unit (CRU) continues to mount, those who’ve been caught green-handed continue to parry their due opprobrium and comeuppance, thanks primarily to a dead-silent mainstream media. But should the hubris and duplicity evident in the emails of those whose millennial temperature charts literally fuel the warming alarmism movement somehow fail to convince the world of the scam that’s been perpetrated upon it, certainly these revelations of the fraud cooked into the computer programs that create such charts will.

First — Let’s briefly review a few pertinent details.

Sarah Palin and the Low Ebb of the Cultural Left

By Claude Sandroff, AT:

This deep, joyful, personal connection Palin makes with the middle class is crudely trivialized by the lamestream media, to use Palin’s phrase, as white-trash populism. In a bizarre recent instance of this mindset, Chris Matthews actually provided real-time commentary focusing on the racial makeup of the huge crowds awaiting Palin’s first book-signing stop in Grand Rapids. ”Well, they look like a white crowd to me…not that there‘s anything wrong with it, but it is pretty monochromatic up there…no surprise in terms of the ethnic nature of the people showing up. Nothing wrong with that. But it is a fact.”

The fact that MS-NBC would this give this cruel, deeply disturbed, fulminating racialist a public forum (though a small one) attests to how venomous our media culture has become. Yet it is Palin who is caricatured as divisive by the left and as superficial even by some putative conservatives. Where Palin’s opponents go, people are usually angry.

Obama’s Science Czar John Holdren involved in unwinding “Climategate” scandal

By Dr. Tim Ball and Judi McLeod, CFP:

Lift up a rock and another snake comes slithering out from the ongoing University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit (CRU) scandal, now riding as “Climategate”.

Obama Science Czar John Holdren is directly involved in CRU’s unfolding Climategate scandal. In fact, according to files released by a CEU hacker or whistleblower, Holdren is involved in what Canada Free Press (CFP) columnist Canadian climatologist Dr. Tim Ball terms “a truculent and nasty manner that provides a brief demonstration of his lack of understanding, commitment on faith and willingness to ridicule and bully people”.

“The files contain so much material that it is going to take some time t o put it all in context,” says Ball. “However, enough is already known to underscore their explosive nature. It is already clear the entire claims and positions of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) are based on falsified manipulated material and is therefore completely compromised.

“The fallout will be extensive as material continues to emerge. Reputations of the scientists involved are already destroyed, however fringe players will continue to be identified and their reputations destroyed or sullied.”

While the mainstream media is bending into pretzels to keep the scandal under the rug, Climategate is already the biggest scientific scandal in history because of the global policy implications.

The emails that reveal an effort to hide the truth about climate science

WSJ:

‘The two MMs have been after the CRU station data for years. If they ever hear there is a Freedom of Information Act now in the U.K., I think I’ll delete the file rather than send to anyone. . . . We also have a data protection act, which I will hide behind.”

So apparently wrote Phil Jones, director of the University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit (CRU) and one of the world’s leading climate scientists, in a 2005 email to “Mike.” Judging by the email thread, this refers to Michael Mann, director of the Pennsylvania State University’s Earth System Science Center. The “two MMs” are almost certainly Stephen McIntyre and Ross McKitrick, two Canadians who have devoted years to seeking the raw data and codes used in climate graphs and models, then fact-checking the published conclusions—a painstaking task that strikes us as a public and scientific service. Mr. Jones did not return requests for comment and the university said it could not confirm that all the emails were authentic, though it acknowledged its servers were hacked.
