The Volunteerism Scandals Hollywood Won’t Be Broadcasting

Michelle Malkin, FrontPage:

Hollywood hearts Obama. Obama hearts government-directed national service. That is why you won’t be able to change the TV channel all week without getting lectured about the need to get off the couch and Do Something. (After your favorite shows are over, of course.) Creeped out? You should be.

The entertainment industry, inspired by Obama’s $6 billion expansion of government volunteerism spending, is coordinating plot lines and ads to push public service. “The message will be nearly ubiquitous,” reports the Los Angeles Times, “starting in the morning with programs such as ‘Today’ and ‘The View,’ and then echoed on soap operas, prime-time series and late-night shows.” First lady Michelle Obama, a relentless AmeriCorps promoter who publicly extolled the Tinseltown initiative last month, will cap off the week with an appearance on “The Jay Leno Show” on Friday.

But don’t expect Leno to ask Mrs. Obama about her reported meddling in personnel decisions at the scandal-plagued AmeriCorps. Or about the program’s long history as a government boondoggle stuffed with make-work jobs, permanent bureaucracies, left-wing slush funds and partisan lobbyists. More on that in a moment.

Anita Dunn, Were You Also Joking About Mother Teresa?

Jamie Glazov, FrontPage;

So President Obama’s White House communications director, Anita Dunn, is off the hook just like that? She praises Mao Zedong, the greatest mass murderer in history, and when confronted on it says she was joking and that’s it. Why is that just it? Would it be just it if any politician or any person in a responsible position out there verbalized an admiration for Adolf Hitler?

The key issue here is that Dunn was clearly not joking.

Hold On, Big Labor

Ben Johnson, FrontPage:

As the Left barrels forward with its agenda to remake the United States, Sen. John McCain has interrupted President Obama’s latest payoff to the Shadow Party. McCain announced Wednesday he would place a hold on Obama’s appointment of Craig Becker to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). Becker is a longtime lawyer for the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which donated $27.8 million to Obama’s 2008 campaign. McCain described Becker as “probably the most controversial nominee that I have seen in a long time” – and that from an administration that has nominated John Holdren, Van Jones, and Carol Browner. Becker has never justified compulsory abortion, blamed a natural disaster on President Bush, or joined an international socialist organization. But he has written that “workers should not be able to choose against having a union”; that employers should have no right to contest fraudulent union elections; and that the NLRB could implement certain portions of Big Labor’s card check proposal even without Congressional approval. Becker took as his own the words of Robert Hoxie, that “unions are ‘formed to escape the evils of individualism.’” And, through a Chicagoland chapter of SEIU, Becker has ties to ACORN and Rod Blagojevich that demand probing.

Prepare for the next war

Asaf Gefen, YNET:

For Israel’s leadership and public, the Goldstone Report is reminiscent of the local summer: Every time you think it’s over, it appears for yet another round that is more tiring and bothersome than the previous one.

Last week, exhausted and sweaty in the wake of the previous rounds, we saw some members of our political establishment capitulate and decide that we’ve repressed enough and that the time has come for a “commission of inquiry.”

On the other hand, Defense Minister Ehud Barak argues that Israel must not abandon its soldiers, yet it’s unclear whether he refers to the commanders who fought in Gaza, or to those who slept in Paris for $2,500 a night.

The Goldstone Report has caused Israel such shame not only because it dared present us as a Goliath, rather than the world’s miserable victims, but mostly because of the Israeli feeling that the report – and the whole world in fact – is trying to snatch our glorious victory in Gaza.

That self-censored Yale book about the Danish cartoons

Ezra Levant:

The Globe and Mail was kind enough to ask me to review Jytte Klausen’s book, “The Cartoons that Shook the World”. It was an informative book, but laced with the author’s own dhimmitude. The fact that Klausen’s publisher, Yale University Press, pre-emptively decided not to reprint the cartoons in a book about the cartoons, shows that her submissiveness is becoming the norm in Western liberal academia, not the exception.

You can read my review here. Here is an excerpt:

Israel and the UN Kangaroo Court

Gregg Rickman, Cutting Edge:

Last week’s consideration of the one-sided Goldstone Report has once again shown the fecklessness and bias of the Human Rights Council. Israel’s indictment by that body should come as no surprise to anyone who knows the UN. Israel simply cannot receive a fair hearing for any accusations placed against it there. As such, the Human Rights Council, and to be more accurate, the entire UN system is rigged against Israel making the process a kangaroo court.

In June 2008, while decrying the US refusal to continue its engagement with the Human Rights Council, Human Rights Watch, could not avoid pointing out these important facts about the Council explaining, “In its first two years, however, the Human Rights Council has failed to address more than 20 human rights situations that require its attention, eliminated human rights monitoring in places desperately in need of such scrutiny, and adopted a long stream of one-sided resolutions on Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories which failed to consider the roles and responsibilities of the Palestinian authorities and armed groups.”

Carbon Sequestration: How Environmentalists Boost Oil Company Profits

By Dr. Tim Ball, CFP:

Environmentalism as practiced by extremists is a blind faith. Their demands for action to deal with non-existent problems create bizarre situations. They ignore science, logic and facts to identify problems so there are often unintended consequences. One involves the environmentalist’s obsession with CO2 and the oil industry. They’re the enemy who produce the energy that drives the engines of capitalism and CO2 supposedly destroying the planet.

IPCC computer models are the only places where CO2 is causing warming or climate change. Actually, human production is miniscule relative to natural amounts. If everybody left the planet except one person who remained to measure changes in CO2 level she would detect no difference. CO2 is essential to plants that use it to grow and produce oxygen to support all other life. Plants grow much more efficiently at levels four and five times higher than current levels. There is no need to reduce the level and significant increases are beneficial to all life.

Environmentalism is a necessary new paradigm and we’re all environmentalists because we realize we must live within the physical constraints of our planet. However, a few with a political agenda claim the title of environmentalist for themselves. From the moral high ground of the new religion they try to convince the world that only they care. Only they can save the planet. Obsession with this objective has created an opportunity for despised oil companies to increase profits and improve the corporate image yet with possible harmful effects to the planet. If you create false problems you’re obliged to find unnecessary and usually false solutions.

When law professors believe Naomi Klein

Hillel Neuer, UN Watch:

Last month’s Harper’s magazine published a revisionist history by Naomi Klein of the 2001 Durban conference and its 2009 would-be sequel, Durban II. My contemporary and fellow Jewish Montrealer told a great story — except that it was entirely fictional, a figment of her rabidly anti-Western and anti-Israel imagination.

For reasons having to do with either the fact that no one reads Harper’s any more, or Naomi Klein’s reputation for making things up, her essay went almost completely ignored, apart from the usual fringe blogs on the extreme left.

Consequently, I didn’t see the need in doing more to correct the historical record than publishing this op-ed, pointing out a few of her article’s numerous distortions – little things like glossing over Col. Qaddafi’s Geneva agent being the organizer of the April 2009 conference — and spotlighting Klein’s three-decade obsession with accusing Jews of being racist, her paranoid ravings about Israel being wicked, depraved and out to get her, and the falsification of a key part of her official biography. (Klein then lashed out, attacking my op-ed as “a wacky stalker article,” but failed to heed admirer Philip Weiss’ request that she explain herself. Turns out the fearless investigative journalist of evil capitalists was outraged that anyone would dare to apply the same scrutiny to her dissembling.)

The Demise of Another Evolutionary Link: Archaeopteryx Falls From Its Perch

ENV:

A few days ago we saw Ida fall from her overhyped status as an ancestor of humans. Now some scientists are claiming that Archaeopteryx should lose its status as an ancestor of modern birds. Calling Archaeopteryx an “icon of evolution,” the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) borrows a term from Jonathan Wells while reporting that “[t]he feathered creature called archaeopteryx, easily the world’s most famous fossil remains, had been considered the first bird since Charles Darwin’s day. When researchers put its celebrity bones under the microscope recently, though, they discovered that this icon of evolution might not have been a bird at all.”

Preparing for Iranian Hegemony in the Middle East

By Gary H. Johnson, Jr., AT:

Newsweek has all but officially become the pulp-based mouthpiece of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Obama administration’s inner sanctum of advisers.

Following the first official U.S. diplomatic effort with Iran on October 1, a few Westerners realized that Iranian hegemony in the Middle East was virtually assured by the Geneva P5 plus 1 sit-down. Iran had proven itself a rational actor on the geopolitical stage by simply passing a letter to the Council on Foreign Relations to be handed to President Obama’s foreign policy team in early September. In that letter, Iran agreed to assume the role of a regional superpower through a process of engagement. The fact that Iran’s new nuclear facility near Qom was not a bombshell in the international community indicated that the world readily accepted Iran’s rejection of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Regime’s rules in defiance of the sanctions it was facing from the international community. In so doing, Iran beat Western leaders to the nuclear punch, agreed to set up token inspections, and set the world on a new axis.

By Bill Warner, AT:

Why don’t Jews and Israel want to deal with propaganda? Simple. It would mean talking about Islam. Jews and Israel must face the facts that the Koran and the Sunna (the actions and words of Mohammed) are filled with invectives against the Jews. At first the words were complimentary, but when the Jews of Medina rejected Mohammed as a prophet they were all enslaved, exiled, murdered and robbed — all acts of jihad. These were not historical acts, but perfect examples of Islamic action towards Jews — models prescribed for Muslims to follow up to the present time. To illustrate the severity of this predicament, statistically speaking, in the Koran of Medina 10.6% of the text is devoted to Jew hatred, whereas, only 6.8% of Mein Kampf is devoted to Jew hatred.

The language and actions of Palestinians and all Muslims in general are directly approved by Islamic political theological doctrine. Not only the language, but also policy is set by the Islamic political doctrine. To repeat: political doctrine — a political theological doctrine of jihad against all kafirs.

Yet, it seems until now that both Jews and Israel choose annihilation over talking about Islam. It is simply not an acceptable subject matter. Political correctness prevails over survival. Unfortunately, these are suicidal choices.
