The Myth of Islamic Tolerance and Peaceful Coexistence – Egypt’s Coptic Christians (1 of 7)
The Myth of Islamic Tolerance and Peaceful Coexistence – Egypt’s Coptic Christians (2 of 7)
Creators Versus Destroyers
by David Horowitz, FrontPage::
Glenn Beck had a terrific show yesterday, a basic lesson in the reality we inhabit. The first segment took off on Patrick Kennedy’s pious blather about how we should all be civil. Beck showed the contrasting images of leftwing fascists behaving violently in Pittsburgh and peaceful tea party enthusiasts on the capitol mall. He also showed the trash left by the environmental hypocrites at the Obama inaugural and the pristine lawn that followed the tea party event. He also read the Times attempt to portray the Pittsburgh riot as a pastoral scene from Bambi and the Times lame efforts to make the tea party patriots look threatening.
Beck’s comment on this was to note the difference between the two sides in this culture war. The side of those who are trying to make this country better and those who want to destroy it. Because they believe that “fundamental change” is in order. These are the people who celebrate the loony pig Michael Moore whose new film declares “capitalism is evil and evil can’t be regulated.”
Capitalism has given the world the only democracies it has ever really known.

updates from China and Egypt

1. Relief camp bombed in Orissa, India
A Christian relief camp in Nandarigi village, Orissa state — where
several families fled following the outbreak of anti-Christian
violence in August 2008 (for more, see
http://www.persecution.net/in-2008-08-27.htm) — was bombed on
September 27. Four Christians were seriously injured in the blast and
the Hindu man that set off the bomb was killed. Five days earlier, the
man had reportedly threatened Christians at the camp with violence,
demanding that he be given food and shelter. He returned the night of
the bombing and, in a heavily intoxicated state, physically assaulted
two Christian boys and uttered more threats against the believers
present. When the man slipped and fell, he accidentally detonated the
bomb. Officials have claimed that Maoist militants were behind the
attack but local Christians maintain that the bombing was planned and
executed by Hindus.
Pray for healing for those injured. Pray that the displaced
Christians will continue to look to the Lord as their enduring source
of strength, provision and wisdom. Ask God to work in the hearts of
Hindu militants targeting Christians so that they will repent and
come to faith in Christ. Demonstrate your support and concern for
suffering Indian Christians in relief camps by posting a prayer on
our Persecuted Church Prayer Wall at

2. Christians imprisoned for evangelizing in Ethiopia
On September 21, a court dismissed an appeal made by two Ethiopian
Christians accused of using gifts and money to entice people to
convert to Christianity, according to a September 25 report from
Compass Direct. Temesgen Alemayehu and Tigist Welde Amanuel went to
Debre Tabor, Amhara state in July to plant a church. After only a
week, several people came to know the Lord through their witness. On
July 19, locals began to question Alemayehu and Amanuel, resulting in
an attack on the Christians. According to local believers, the
instigators were from the “Fellowship of Saints” — a group within
the Ethiopian Orthodox Church that works to counter reform movements
and protect the church from outside threats. Amanuel was able to
escape the assailants and flee to a home nearby, where she was kept
safe until police arrived. When officers arrived on scene, they were
able to rescue Alemayehu, who was wounded, from the crowd and bring
him into custody. The attackers accused Alemayehu and Amanuel of
insulting their religion. The believers were found guilty on July 23
and sentenced to six months in prison.
Pray that these believers will exemplify the love of God through
consistent love and prayer for those who persecute them (Matthew
5:43-48). Pray for their safety and release from prison. You can post
a prayer for Alemayehu and Amanuel on our Persecuted Church Prayer
Wall at http://www.persecution.net/prayerwall.

3. Pastor attacked by Hindu militants in Andhra Pradesh, India
Pastor Vanamali Parishudham (35) was brutally assaulted by Hindu
militants in Yellareddygudam village in Andhra Pradesh on September
20, according to a September 28 report from Compass Direct. The
militants attacked the pastor while he walking home from a Sunday
worship service, battering him with sharp-edged metal rods. He was
left for dead in the middle of the road, unconscious and bleeding
profusely from his head. He was later taken to a local hospital where
he received six stitches. At last report, he was undergoing head scans
to detect any internal injuries. Commenting on the incident, Pastor
Parishudham said: “I am scared and fear facing more attacks in the
future, but I will continue to preach and go to the prayer house.”
Pray for healing for Pastor Parishudham. Pray that he will grow in
Christlikeness as he suffers for his faith (James 1:2-4). Pray that
the faithfulness of Indian Christians will be a light that draws
others to Christ.

4. Chinese pastor and wife forced to vacate home
Pastor Zhang “Bike” Mingxuan and his wife were forcibly escorted
from their home on the morning of September 23 by Beijing Public
Security Bureau and Religious Affairs officials, according to a
September 25 report from ChinaAid. The two are being detained at an
undisclosed location in Henan to “preserve stability in the province”
for China’s National Day celebrations on October 1. Pastor Zhang, the
leader of the Chinese House Church Alliance, has been frequently
attacked and detained by officials (see
http://www.persecution.net/cn-2009-04-08.htm). He has been warned
against speaking or communicating with outside sources about his
detention, especially the foreign media. The couple will reportedly
be held for the duration of the National Day celebrations.
Ask God to sustain and protect Pastor Zhang and his wife while in
detention. Pray for significant and lasting advances in religious
freedom in China.

5. Update: Fushan church leaders detained by officials in China
Nine church leaders of the Fushan Church in Linfen City, China were
seized by Shanxi Public Security Bureau officials on September 25,
according to a September 29 report from ChinaAid. The leaders were
travelling to Beijing to seek justice from the central government for
the September 13 attack on their church site (see
http://www.persecution.net/cn-2009-09-16.htm) when they were
apprehended without warrant. Following the arrest, officials
confiscated church-owned property such as computers and televisions,
terming them “illegal materials,” and placed the church’s other
leaders and members under house arrest and constant surveillance. The
next day, state military police were stationed inside the church
building to prevent believers from entering or holding services. More
than 30 daughter churches nearby have also been prohibited from
gathering together for worship. At last report, the whereabouts and
condition of the detained Christians were unknown.

6. Update: Convert to Christianity barred from leaving Egypt
An Egyptian Christian convert from Islam who has been fighting for
legal recognition of his faith (see
http://www.persecution.net/eg-2009-06-17.htm) was detained and
mistreated by officials at Cairo International Airport on September
17, according to a September 26 report from Assyrian International
News Agency. Maher El-Gohary and his daughter, Dina, were at the
airport setting out on a two-week holiday to China when officials
stopped them. El-Gohary’s passport was confiscated and he was told
that orders from a “higher authority” barred him from leaving the
country. His lawyer later joined him at the airport and filed an
incident report at the airport police station. That same day,
El-Gohary told a Christian media source that “the authorities are
trying to pressure us to convert back to Islam,
but this will never happen, even if we have to live on the streets. We
love our Lord Jesus, and we have left Islam for good.” On September
22, El-Gohary and Dina again attempted to leave for China but were
stopped by officials.

New FCC Chairman Targets internet
By James G. Lakely, AT:
New Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski could have used a few more dollops of genuine humility in his Monday speech advocating enforceable “network neutrality” rules for the Internet. Despite declaring “we cannot know what tomorrow holds on the Internet,” he showed he intends to lead the FCC as if it were all-knowing. That will only end up choking the greatest engine of innovation in modern times.
Genachowski laid out his plans in a highly anticipated speech at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC. The mostly voluntary concept of net neutrality — which encourages the free flow of content across the Internet — would be transformed into formal rules Internet service providers (ISPs) would violate at their peril.
Instead of managing traffic in response to market forces, ISPs would be forced to cede such decisions to the FCC, which would decide which practices are “fair” and “reasonable” on a “case-by-case basis.”

Politically-Correct Scientism
The View From 1776:
Cherry-picking data to support a preconceived hypothesis is not science.
For some years skeptical scientists have vainly requested the full array of data underlying the famous hockey-stick graph that purports to show a sudden and sharp uptrend of global temperatures in recent years.
Their skepticism was well founded. After the full array of tree-ring data was finally made available to public scrutiny, it became apparent that the hockey-stick graph was a deliberate fabrication. There is no sudden upswing of temperatures reflected in the tree-ring data.

Obama’s Enemies of Liberty, Freedom and Humans on a Roll
By Sher Zieve:
Despite growing opposition from We-the-People to ObamaCare and all of his other patently Socialist programs, Dictator-in-Chief Obama and his paid minions have vowed to continue to fight us. Last month’s Town hall meetings—at which we protested ObamaCare and Cap and Tax—appear to have had no little-to-no-impact on our elected liberal officials.
The 12 September 1.7 Millions strong Patriots March on Washington D.C. was largely ignored by both Obama’s state-run media and his politicians, alike. Obama even arranged to be out of town meeting with a hand-picked crowd of fawning supporters, that day. The politicians are still refusing to listen to us.
Members of the Democrat-run US House of Representatives are reneging on their promises and are—yet again—pushing for inclusion of illegal aliens into ObamaCare. Rep. Steve King (R-IA) said incredulously: “If anybody can, with a straight face, advocate that we should provide health insurance for people who broke into our country, broke our law and for the most part are criminals, I don’t know where they ever would draw the line.”

Deception
Cal Thomas:
If you are an enemy of America seeking her destruction, you would add to your pursuit of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons the undermining of this nation from within. You would do this largely through deception, putting on a peaceful face while subtly plotting ways to bring America down.
That tactic was on display last Friday in Washington as a crowd estimated at 3,000 Muslims gathered to pray. The organizer of the rally, Imam Abdul Malik of Brooklyn, N.Y., told Americans what we like to hear: “What we’ve done today, you couldn’t do in any Muslim country. If you prayed on the palace lawn there, they’d lock you up.”
As reported by The Washington Times Sadara Shaw, a resident of Washington, D.C., was quoted as saying “It’s a show of solidarity to show all Muslims are not terrorists but law-abiding citizens.” That is probably true, but irrelevant since it takes only a small number of terrorists to cause havoc.
“We believe in America’s possibilities,” Malik told the crowd. “We didn’t come to criticize our nation … I want the American people to know that we love you.”
The Imam’s Facebook page tells a different story.

Iran’s true leaders
National Post:
It is becoming increasingly clear that Iran is governed not by “Supreme Leader” Ayatollah Ali Khamenei or the “supreme” council of mullahs — which would be bad enough — but by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its political allies, comprising the most extreme elements of Iran’s society, military and government. This is doubly frightening given recent revelations that Iran has for years been concealing the existence of a second uranium enrichment plant and over the weekend test-fired a new array of missiles.

The Jihadists are Mushrooming Inside America
By Walid Phares, AIM:
It is unprecedented in American counterterrorism annals: in one day, the nation was dealing with three separate jihadist plots to blow up civilian and other targets inside the homeland. Although the cases were addressed at different time periods by the FBI and other agencies, nevertheless, the thickening web of terror attempts breached the crossing line of U.S. national security.
This past week, authorities revealed three conspiracies by American jihadists: Michael C. Finton, a 29-year-old man who wished to follow the steps of American-born Taliban John Walker Lindh, was arrested after trying to detonate what he thought was a bomb inside a van outside a federal courthouse in Springfield, Illinois. Hosam Maher Husein Smadi, a 19-year-old Jordanian national, was arrested after placing what he believed was a bomb at a downtown Dallas skyscraper. But perhaps the most troubling case is of Afghan-born Najibullah Zazi, who set up shop in suburban Denver, scouting the Web and visiting beauty supply stores in a hunt for chemicals needed to build bombs for al Qaeda. Sources called the alleged plot one of the most significant terror threats to the U.S. since 9/11. Add to the list the North Carolina Jihad cell, led by Daniel Patrick “Saifullah” Boyd, which was planning on attacking civilian and military targets across the country.
The immediate question being raised by an increasingly worried public regarding all of these terror cases is: are they all connected?

What They’re Telling Us
Mark Steyn, NRO:
They’re telling you who they really fear. Whom the media gods would destroy they first make into “mad men.” Liz Cheney should be due for the treatment any day now.
Sad to say, many who should know better go along with it. Our old comrade David Frum wrote a piece called “Whose Side Is Glenn Beck On?” Well, in the space of a week Beck claimed the scalps of Van Jones, ACORN and that Yosi Sergant guy at the NEA, none of whom should ever have been anywhere near the corridors of power but who’d still be there if it weren’t for Beck. So whoever’s side he is on, it seems pretty clear he’s not on the Obama administration’s. Hence, Media Matters’s sudden obsession with such pressing concerns as Glenn’s mom’s three decade-old suicide.
The media would like the American Right to be represented by the likes of Bob Dole and John McCain, decent old sticks who know how to give dignified concession speeches

Iran Put Nuclear Site Inside of Mountain
NEWSMAX:
He said the nuclear facility is next to a military compound of the Revolutionary Guard, Iran’s most powerful military force, equipped with an air defense system. Salehi also said President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told him Tuesday he named the enrichment plant “Meshkat,” which means Lantern.
“This site is at the base of a mountain and was selected on purpose in a place that would be protected against aerial attack. That’s why the site was chosen adjacent to a military site,” Salehi told a news conference. “It was intended to safeguard our nuclear facilities and reduce the cost of active defense system. If we had chosen another site, we would have had to set up another aerial defense system.”
Details about the newly revealed site and the fact that Iran kept its construction secret for years have raised more suspicion among experts and Western governments that Iran’s nuclear program is aimed at producing weapons _ something Tehran has long denied. The U.S. and its allies have strongly condemned Iran over the site and demanded it immediately come clean on its nuclear activities or face harsher international sanctions.

Tooth Fairy Economics
Beyond that, pro-stimulus thinkers show remarkably little curiosity about why the so-called idle resources are idle in the first place. They are idle because of some previous entrepreneurial miscalculation. What might have caused systemic miscalculation of this kind? Could it be the Federal Reserve’s manipulation of interest rates, which leads investors to make incorrect assessments of profitability and provokes false economic booms, as F.A. Hayek won the Nobel Prize for showing in 1974?
H/T: Linda at The Great Pumpkin
Unmasking Obama
By Thomas Lifson, AT:
It is now abundantly clear that the image of Barack Obama sold to the American electorate was tightly edited, air-brushed, and exaggerated. He has worn a series of masks — eloquent orator, brilliant scholar, centrist, and literary sensation. All of these masks are coming off as he copes with a job for which image will not suffice. For instance, hiding behind the eloquent orator mask is a guy who says “uhh” a lot when he is winging it, and who makes lots of factual and grammatical mistakes.
Now, thanks to Jack Cashill, the literary mask has been removed. Obama is a literary pretender.

The book itself
David Warren:
The “Year of Darwin” continues, in celebration of the 150th anniversary of On the Origin of Species, and 200th of the ineffable Charles himself. We have now survived three-quarters of it, and are feeling all the fitter for the experience.
The idea behind almost all of the public events has been to propagandize for atheism — to drive into the thick skulls of common folk that their religious beliefs are primitive, irrational and highly unfashionable; that the “cool kids” are all strict “scientific materialists.” The frustration of the Darwinists is understandable. Many of them are unhappy university professors, deep in the suspicion that the world is ignoring them. Their superior intellects are not properly acknowledged; their own students sometimes jest behind their backs.
Yet the importance of their enterprise is reflected in the number of polls that have been commissioned, showing that after decades, or rather, generations of Darwinist indoctrination, large sections of the public — not only in Red State America, but in Europe and everywhere — still don’t “get it.” They still think nature is full of teleological surprises; that man, all life and the universe itself are expressive of some mysterious purposeful order.
How can they be so stupid? How can they not see that all these things were created by Nothing?

Andy Williams accuses Barack Obama of following Marxist theory
Telegraph [UK]:
Williams, a lifelong Republican whose hits include Moon River and Music To Watch Girls By, told the Radio Times he thought Mr Obama wanted to turn the US into a “socialist country”.
The 81-year-old was a friend of the Kennedy family during the 1960s and was present at the Los Angeles rally where Robert F Kennedy was assassinated in 1968.
[...]
But Williams had a less favourable opinion of the current president.
“Don’t like him at all,” he said, “I think he wants to create a socialist country. The people he associates with are very Left-wing. One is registered as a Communist.
“Obama is following Marxist theory. He’s taken over the banks and the car industry. He wants the country to fail.

Krauthammer’s Take
NRO:
From Fox News Sunday Roundtable.
On Obama’s performance at the U.N. last week:
I think he indulged himself in his speech at the General Assembly, which started out as sort of adolescent utopianism and then it went downhill.
He started out saying things like “no nation can dominate another.” He said no group of nations ought to be above others. Well, what about the Security Council on which he sat the very next day?
And then he said that — that alignments of nations rooted in the cleavages of the Cold War are senseless. Does that mean that NATO is senseless, that our alliance with Japan is senseless?
What do our allies think when they hear that, and when they hear, as we saw in that clip, Obama denigrating his own country and presenting himself as the man who will redeem America from its wickedness?

‘The Complete Infidel’s Guide to the Koran’ (review)
by Kathy Shaidle, Examiner:
Spencer, who has studied the Koran in depth for many years, offers ready answers for apologists who insist that Islam is a “peaceful religion” that has been “misunderstood” by a “tiny minority of extremists.”
Using actual quotations from the Koran itself, Spencer argues that this is simply not the case. He insists that anti-Semitism and anti-Christian feeling is rife throughout the Muslim holy book, not to mention all the verses advocating domestic violent.
Spencer also compares the New Testament’s famous teachings about loving your enemies with Koranic injunctions to kill them. Overall, the Koran is steeped in troubling stories of slavery, occupation and downright strangeness that will surprise readers expecting it to be a sort of “Arabian Nights” version of the Christian Gospel.

Media Matters asks: Did Glenn Beck’s mother really commit suicide?
by Kathy Shaidle NewsReal Blog:
Besides condemning anyone committing the latest “sin” — that is, referring to “illegal immigrants” as, er, “illegal immigrants” — Media Matters‘ “senior fellows” are now devoting their considerable energy and financial resources to one of the pressing issues of our time: whether or not Glenn Beck is lying about the way his mother died.
Like you, I’ve been unable to sleep at night, obsessing about the details of a total stranger’s death by drowning back in 1979.
(If only Media Matters allotted this much online real estate to another young woman’s untimely watery demise; however, typing “Mary Jo Kopechne” into the Media Matters search function yields only four mentions, all of them chiding conservatives for being so gauche as to mention the name of the young woman who died forty years ago when she was a passenger in a car that Senator Ted Kennedy drove off a bridge.)
Using recent stories at Salon.com and other outlets as a launching pad, Media Matters informs readers that:

A farcical attempt to paint Israel black
Ron Prosor, The Times [UK]:
It is impossible to escape the obsession of the Human Rights Council (and I chuckle every time I write its name) with Israel. In three years, it has issued 25 resolutions against individual states: 20 of them targeted Israel. Basic maths suggests that Israel, a tiny democracy permanently threatened by dictatorships and terrorists, is guilty of 80 per cent of the world’s human rights offences. This is ridiculous, as is a human rights body with member states that still view public beheadings as a wholesome leisure activity.
The UNHRC’s glaring spotlight on Israel blinds it to its official purpose: it is oblivious to the one million displaced people in Somalia, one million displaced in Pakistan or the 300,000 Tamil civilians currently languishing in Sri Lanka. In Darfur Sudan is responsible for at least 400,000 deaths. Yet the council has never condemned the Sudanese Government, and in fact praised it for its “co-operation”.
The UNHRC also remains silent over the systematic rape and torture of pro-democracy activists protesting against the stolen election in Iran. That’s unsurprising. Last week, President Ahmadinejad once again spewed out an anti-Semitic rant at the UN General Assembly. But in April he was the keynote speaker of the UNHRC in Geneva. As the UN passes Mr Ahmadinejad the microphone, his regime recently silenced the leader of the Iranian bus workers’ union by quite literally slashing his tongue.
The Goldstone report’s lack of credibility has not gone unnoticed in all quarters. Canada, Japan and the EU all refused to support Justice Richard Goldstone’s mission from the start. Even Switzerland, which has often lavished red-carpet treatment on tyrants, acknowledged that the anti-Israel bigotry of Goldstone’s team made it unsupportable. Mary Robinson, the former Irish President and a fierce critic of Israel, described Goldstone’s mandate as “guided not by human rights but by politics”.
It is no surprise, therefore, that the report wilfully ignores the context of Operation Cast Lead.

The President And Two Dictators
Claudia Rosett, Forbes:
America has “re-engaged the United Nations,” said President Barack Obama in his maiden speech Wednesday to the U.N. General Assembly. Yes, it has, and within hours both Libya’s Col. Muammar al-Qaddafi and Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had gone far to illustrate what a terrible idea that reengagement is.
If the current scene at the U.N. augurs a new world order, it’s one in which Libya’s man, Ali Abdussalam Treki, now wields the gavel of the General Assembly, and al-Qaddafi himself takes the podium right after Obama to steal the show. It’s a new order in which Ahmadinejad mounts the stage for the fifth time in five years to herald a global destiny of “love and spirituality” as prefigured in his Islamic Republic of Iran, which he tells us–the bloody streets of Tehran notwithstanding–has just “successfully gone through a glorious and fully democratic election.”

J.C. WATTS: Put away the race card
J.C. WATTS, Las Vegas Review-Journal:
In fairness to President Carter, I do believe in redemption, and that people can change. But more and more people are inclined to say anyone who disagrees with Barack Obama must be racist.
It hurts me when the left and the right use race for political gain, and it depresses me further that it’s so awkward for us to talk about honestly and objectively about race. However, the implication that disagreeing with the president is racist also saddens and perplexes me.
Donna Brazile, campaign manager for Al Gore in 2000 and now a CNN analyst, nailed it when she said, “No one wins in touching race in such a shallow way. It raises defenses and creates backlash.”

How inconsistent that the media loved disgruntled conservatives being disenchanted with Bush, but abhor criticism of President Obama.
There are people of all colors who believe we are literally mortgaging our children’s futures with this spending spree. These people would have felt the same with if it were President Hillary Clinton, Kerry, Bill Richardson or any other president proposing the nationalization of 16 percent of our economy and spending like there’s no tomorrow.
Ironically, I wonder how President Carter would view things if it were President Clarence Thomas proposing tax relief, protection for the unborn, raising the troop levels in Afghanistan or exploring for oil right here in the United States.

Israel on the brain
Jonathan Kay, National Post:
Pity Manuel Zelaya. Not only has the leftist been turfed from Honduras’s presidency, he is now apparently being hunted down by futuristic Jewish commandos.
Zelaya was thrown out of Honduras on June 28, after he tried to hold an illegal referendum. In recent days, he snuck back in, and promptly holed up in the Brazilian embassy. This is where the sinister Semites come in: According to Zelaya, his cramped quarters are under siege from “Israeli mercenaries” armed with what a Miami Herald interviewer describes as “high-frequency radiation” and “toxic gases” that “alter [Zelaya's] physical and mental state.”
For their part, Israeli government sources in Miami “could not confirm” the presence of Zionist agents. But I’d say Zelaya’s claim is credible: From Tegucigalpa to Toronto, there’s no doubt that a lurid obsession with Israeli villainy has altered the “mental state” of many a socialist.
Indeed, this toxic obsession — let us call it Zelayonism — has become the leading form of psychosis on the left side of the political spectrum.

No wonder the U.S.government under Obama wants Zelaya returned to power in Honduras.
Outsourcing Hate
by P.J. O’Rourke, Weekly Standard:
This is exactly the problem. I live in rural New Hampshire and we are, frankly, short on people who are black, gay, Jewish, and Hispanic. In fact, we’re short on people. My town has a population of 301. When it comes to bias we’re pretty much reduced to an occasional slur against French-Canadians. But my grandfather was French-Canadian, so I feel that it is somewhat inappropriate for me to express scorn for Frenchies. That is, liberals have a monopoly on self-loathing as a result of neurosis entitlements and affirmative anxiety programs for which I, as a Republican, do not qualify. Thus it is that I have to drive all the way to Dorchester and then out to Provincetown and down to New York City and back to be narrow minded enough to satisfy Jimmy Carter, Nancy Pelosi, Rahm Emmanuel, and their friend Hugo Chávez.

Our opinions on Europe have been ignored for too long
Telegraph [UK]:
[...]
Indeed, one of the reasons for running this series has been to do what our political parties hardly ever do themselves: consider the workings of the EU machine and the problems that confront it. We have been reminded that the EU’s origins lay in the rubble of the Second World War and in a laudable desire to develop an association in which free people could trade and thrive together after centuries of political tensions and catastrophic warfare. But the EU has become a vast, bureaucratic, unaccountable empire whose remit runs way beyond policing the common market. Its policies are made in secret, then insufficiently scrutinised in Brussels or national capitals. Yet its directives and regulations affect the lives of half a billion people. It is time we were asked what we think about it.
Germany veers right – socialists ‘slaughtered’
Rick Moran, AT:
This may be a harbinger of things to come or, just as likely, a purely German reaction to the failed programs of the social democrats. But Chancellor Angela Merkel’s return to power has come with a price. Her center right Christian Democrats saw their majority shrink but in a big surprise, the pro-business Free Democratic Party increased their share of deputies in the Bundestag and Merkel will be forced to make concessions to the FDP if she wants them in her governing coalition.
As America veers hard left, Germany and the rest of Europe appears ready to lurch rightward; and how ironic is that?

Stop Allowing The Left To Set The Rules
By Lloyd Marcus, AT:
The rules set by the Left are extremely clear. Racist images of black conservatives and negative images of Bush are fair game. Even a play about murdering President Bush was called “harmless art”. Meanwhile, all unflattering images of Obama are racist, and constitute dangerous, potentially violent hate speech.
New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd called Congressman Joe Wilson a racist for saying, “You lie” to president Obama. Using her psychic powers, Dowd said Wilson was really saying in his mind, “You lie, BOY!” And yet, liberal commentator Julianne Malveaux, saying she hopes black conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’ wife “feeds him a lot of fatty foods so he will die early from heart disease like many black men”, was not considered racist.

Redefining Sarah Palin
By James Lewis, AT:
Obama seems to be incapable of controlling his own egomania, and that means further humiliations in the years ahead. Remember that Bill Clinton looked unbeatable in 1992 and was impeached by a Republican House in 1998. No president since Richard Nixon has been brought lower than Clinton was ten years ago. Today we may be seeing Obama at the very peak of his ballistic orbit, and just beginning to curve down.
But you can’t beat a strong candidate with a weak one, and the GOP notoriously nominates some real duds. Palin has scared the Left into mass hysteria because of her star quality on the campaign trail with a visibly creaking John McCain. Sarah Palin is our only charismatic leader at this profoundly dangerous time. That is why her actions are so important to the fate of the GOP, and to the future of this country and the world. Her use of Facebook to make public policy statements has been both effective and smart. Palin is using the web just as Reagan used radio and TV, to get around the murderous filter of the media.

Mr. Stelmach– tear down this free speech wall!
Calgary Herald:
Is the tide of Canadian censorship finally starting to turn?
We are hopeful, though not tempted to complacency.
This week, the Alberta Human Rights Commission cited a string of recent court and commission climb-downs, in the reasons it gave for dismissing a complaint lodged against this newspaper and its corporate companion, the Edmonton Journal.
Naturally, the Herald –which has been very vocal on this issue for many years, if not decades– welcomes the decision.
However, it rests on an interpretation by a human rights commission of its own powers: The situation is thus somewhat comparable to the police investigating allegations of police misbehaviour. So, while it is a good thing that commissions are starting to realize how much they have exceeded the intentions of those who established them, a reduction of their powers must be cemented with new legislation, if free-speech rights are to be properly protected.
The case involving the Herald and the Journal arose from an editorial published in April 2002, which catalogued several allegations of duplicity, manipulation, atrocity and hypocrisy on the part of Palestinian leaders in their dealings with Israel.

At the time, reports of terrorist activity came almost daily, interspersed with the late Yasser Arafat’s protestations that all he wanted was peace: The matter was top of mind, and ripe for public examination. However, Muslim advocates complained that it was “likely to expose to hatred or contempt Palestinian Arabs and Muslims,” though there was no proof of that whatsoever and it was certainly not the intent.
Initially, the AHRC was inclined to agree, its 2004 Investigating Report finding “merit” to the complaint.

Intolerance on the Temple Mount
AVID KIRSHENBAUM , THE JERUSALEM POST:
Last week, our synagogue in Beit Shemesh made its annual High Holy Day week visit to the Temple Mount. We began the tradition six years ago when the site was reopened to non-Muslims. During the first three years following the start of the September 2000 war launched against Israel by the Palestinian Authority, Hamas and Hizbullah, the government decided to reward Arab terror by barring all non-Muslims from even setting foot on the Temple Mount.
Visiting the Temple Mount is a schizophrenic experience. When standing there, it is impossible not to be awestruck by the magnitude of where you are and the enormity of the colossal events that took place there. It is on the Temple Mount that both the First and Second Temple stood for nearly 1,000 years, where millions of Jews from all over the Land of Israel and the Diaspora made the three festival pilgrimages and where, according to Jewish belief, the Third Temple, ushering in the days of the messiah, is destined to be built. Throughout history, whenever and wherever Jews were engaged in prayer, they faced Jerusalem. And when in Jerusalem, they pray in the direction of the Temple Mount.

Two Jews
Anne Liebermansrc:
//
Two Jews stand like bookends, with nearly a hundred years and six million murdered relatives in between.
At one end, it’s 1911 and Zev Jabotinsky is writing an essay he calls, “Instead of Excessive Apology.”The neighbors live and are not ashamed….Do our neighbors blush for the Christians in Kishinyov who hammered nails into Jewish babies’ eyes?We immediately understand from his question that they did not… blush.“Not in the least,– they walk with head raised high and look everybody in the face; they are absolutely right, and this is how it must be, as the persona of a people is royal, and not responsible and is not obliged to apologize…”In the face of this extraordinary depravity for which no shame is evident, Jabotinsky concludes that we, the Jewish people, “do not have to account to anybody” — especially, I would guess, not to those who hammer nails into babies’ eyes. Our babies.
